Wow. Looks like we have another JA fan. Techically, that was the Jefferson Starship, "Blows Against the Empire" great album.
It would seem those Swedes don’t like the slaves leaving the plantation either.
Part of it has to do with religious intolerance. Some of it has to do with the great famines. A lot of it has to do with plain old fashioned authoritarianism back home ~ and then, too, this was a convenient place to send folks they didn't want!
BTW, many of the folks dispatching undesirables to America came on over themselves ~ so when you dig into your own genealogy, you got your good guys, you got your victims, and you got your victimizers!
The first ship sent to America to begin New Sweden was the KALMAR NYCKEL ~ a former ore carrier. There were well over 100 people on board ~ men, women and children. The manifest shows 5 officers who could speak Swedish. The 90 or so heads of families spoke FIN which meant Sa'ami at the time. Their families were on board. NO ONE WENT BACK!
The FIN were deportees who'd gotten too close to Stockholm in winter.
That was in 1638. 40 years earlier Swedes had reconnoitered Virginia working as surveyors for the Spanish. They liked what they saw. Their friends, relatives and servants got shipped out first. Then 172 years later, with the fall of the Swedish Empire, rich Swedes in Finland cashed out their lands, factories and holdings and headed to America straight to the Lower Midwest to purchase vast tracts of land in the new states and the territories.
Do you know how many ways there are to spell ANDERSON, NELSON, HAAKEN/HOKEN, HOVAS, CARLSON? It's a lot! All those guys came here. I'm not counting the Norwegians in this. They have a slightly different history.
Thanks for the info, but I was criticizing (sarcastically) the Swedish government, not the people.

It’s actualy quite an accurate statement about Swedish sense of orderliness ~ that’s why half of them are here, and half of them are there. It’s not possible to be sarcastic about the last fully authoritarian society left in Europe!
