I don't claim to understand it, but in England at that time, males (upper class) had homosexual relationships in high school, then went on to be "normal" heterosexual men afterwards. See Robert Graves, Goodbye to All That. I don't understand it, but I am not sure all those people were gay in the way we understand it.

Yeah, from what I know about the whole spectrum of British arts and culture throughout the entire 20th century, there DOES seem to be a preponderance of homosexuality, and other
forms of perversity running through it—not just talking about Oscar Wilde and “The Other Victorians” as described in a great study by Steven Marcus 40 yrs. ago. Check out the hidden history of Eric Gill, prominent printer/graphic designer/artist decades ago in Britain, flagrant flamboyant
exhibitionism, right up to an including Bestiality.Most of
what we associate with the standard British typography/signage/font styles in the UK for the last 80 years or so came from Eric Gill.
