Sowell: Words That Replace Thought
Creators Syndicate ^ | May 7, 2013 | Thomas Sowell

If there is ever a contest for words that substitute for thought, "diversity" should be recognized as the undisputed world champion.

You don't need a speck of evidence, or a single step of logic, when you rhapsodize about the supposed benefits of diversity. The very idea of testing this wonderful, magical word against something as ugly as reality seems almost sordid.

To ask whether institutions that promote diversity 24/7 end up with better or worse relations between the races than institutions that pay no attention to it is only to get yourself regarded as a bad person. To cite hard evidence that places obsessed with diversity have worse race relations is to risk getting yourself labeled an incorrigible racist. Free thinking is not free.

The Supreme Court of the United States has ruled that the government has a "compelling interest" in promoting diversity — apparently more compelling than the 14th Amendment's requirement of "equal protection" of the law for everybody.

How does a racially homogeneous country like Japan manage to have high quality education, without the essential ingredient of diversity, for which there is supposedly a "compelling" need?

Conversely, why does India, one of the most diverse nations on Earth, have a record of intergroup intolerance and lethal violence today that is worse than that in the days of our Jim Crow South?

Even to ask such questions is to provoke charges of unworthy tactics, and motives too low to be dignified with an answer. Not that the true believers in diversity could answer anyway.

Among the candidates for runner-up to "diversity" as the top word for making thought obsolete is "fair."

Now here’s some real diversity. German Composer, German Language - Korean Orchestra and Korean Conductor? And what about those black outfits, black shoes & white ties? What’s with the uniformity? Where are the tattoos, nipple rings, backward baseball caps and butt-crack revealing trousers?

Check out the oboe player at 21:15 and that Korean Baritone coming in at 50:26 in German is simply divine.

DoubleSpeak is pretty much all you get from the Left.

George Orwell wrote 1984 as a warning, not a blueprint.

Libs/progressives have changed their tune in 100 years time. When they first started rabble-rousing, most of them just wanted everyone to have enough food, shelter, and clothing. Now they insist everyone should have what everyone else has. Asking them to work for what they desire fails to make an impression on them. For progressives, it’s simply not fair that one person has a dollar more than another person. Hence, the phony “wealth gap” argument despite the fact the poor are the fattest group of Americans, and few sleep naked under bridges. It’s never enough for leftists.

I call them “wall words” because they erect a wall that not only stops thinking, but also pretends to be impregnable.

Dr. Sowell can get past those walls and get people to start thinking again.

Thank you for the ping, Jaz.

Well put...Dr. Sowell is not only a great thinker but can stimulate thinking by others with his talent for writing.

Most welcome as always, TOL.

Words have very distinct meanings without which true discourse and debate are rendered meaningless.

People who think - like Sowell - are so much more interesting than people who take on ideas as if they were the 'in' clothes of the season...

Amen...He’s so good at coming up with examples that are dead on the mark.

For “relativism” to be able to “deconstruct” all aspects of a civilization and culture, you must mandate “diversity”, especially calling for multiple objects when previously only one existed or was considered before.

No truth, but truths.

Justice for one is now various justice for the many.

As Sowell points out in his books, Rights of the many always trup real individual right.

If you have citizens born or naturalized, you must also have citizens-illegal.

Only when every category is muddled, when every truth is conflicted, when every field is a vile mess, then the annoited (again in Sowell’s works), those that really CARE, come forward to make our choices for us.

The man is a giant.
