The Firearms Statistics That Gun Control Advocates Don’t Want to See
yahoo.com/The Blaze ^ | 6 May, 2013 | Jason Howerton

To accompany TheBlaze's coverage of the National Rifle Association's annual meeting in Houston, we figured it could be helpful to share some gun statistics pointed out to us by some of the NRA Convention attendees. Forget the talking points used by both sides in the gun control debate; we're going to be talking about verified statistics.

Gun control advocates be advised, these are not the statistics you are looking for.

According to data from the FBI's uniform crime reports, California had the highest number of gun murders in 2011 with 1,220 -- which makes up 68 percent of all murders in the state that year and equates to 3.25 murders per 100,000 people.

The irony of such a grisly distinction is evident when you look at which state was named the state with the strongest gun control laws in 2011 by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. You guessed it -- it was California.

"What is very unusual is that California also has a program by which we can remove guns, recover guns from people who have a gun and then subsequently become prohibited or dangerous," Brady Campaign spokeswoman Amanda Wilcox said at the time.

It should be noted, though, that California is also one of the biggest states in the country, with a population of about about 37 million. Therefore, it might make sense that it would have a high number of murders but its murder rate is still high as gun control has had a seemingly inconsequential impact. In comparison, Texas has a population of about 25.6 million and saw 699 total gun murders in 2011 -- nearly half that of California -- and a firearms murder rate of 2.91 per 100,000.

Murder rates for specific ethnicities in the US as compared to specific ethnicities in the Old World are quite meaningful.

All American ethnic groups are less violent than their counterparts abroad!

, the draconian measures -- which lasted more than three decades -- didn't had the desired effect.

Reporters always make the same assumption about what the "desired effect" of someting like this is. I think they are mostly wrong. I think it is the principle that a country or a districts subjects should not have the effrontery of being armed. It is disrespectful of the Rulers. Criminals being armed is not really seen as much of a problem. The crime rate and armed criminals accomplishes the desired purpose of keeping the regular folks off balance and depending on the rulers for protection. That increases the rulers' power over their subjects.

To a liberal a fact is a mental construct and no more real than any other fantasy.

Exactly!

The US Virgin Islands, that’s right “U.S.”..................has a murder rate of 42 per 100,000 which is many times anywhere in the U.S. This murder rate makes USVI #8 in the world ahead of #9 South Africa. So, even D.C. has a long way to go to meet that.

The issues there are woven into the culture to be sure. Jumping to the end of a long story, this FACT means they can’t fix it. The cops are all related to non cops including prosecutors and judges so you can commit a gun related crime “if your the right skin color” and get away with it. You will be out on bond to a straight faced judge (relative) before the sun goes down.

You can own a gun if your white but then the cops reportedly sell the information about you and your guns to the highest bidder on the street.

The “process” in terms of paperwork to own and maintain a gun in USVI is, most think, just not worth it and arguably puts you in more danger. Then, if a black guy broke in your place and you shot him, you better own a private plane or a fast motor boat because you won’t be getting out of a horrible prison quickly. After more than a year of shootouts and robberies of friends, in the USVI and St. Maarten, I moved back to Texas.

Thanks for the report on the USVI. It provided info I’d not read or heard about before.

Amusingly, this is a devastating thing to point out to the left if they insist that guns are the problem. Point out that because guns *can’t* be the problem, because there are many places with far more guns and much less gun violence, the problem *must* be that the *people* who live in gun control areas are more prone to violence and murder.

So they don’t need gun control, but to control their own people. Figure out what people are causing the gun violence and homicides, lock them up and throw away the key.

And we all know who those people are, don’t we?

This argument would make liberals gnash their teeth.

If black people are eliminated from the killers and the victims, America’s homicide rate approaches that of Europe.

Remove Hispanics, and it is right in the middle of the European spectrum of murder rates.

The argument that they put forward is essentially: We cannot keep guns out of the hands of irresponsible people unless we take them away from everyone except the military and police. Otherwise, the irresponsible people will just steal them!

That is their argument.

Hispanics are less clear. That is, in the gun control states, Hispanics are much more prone to gun violence. However, if you look at Hispanics on a national level, their gun violence rates are about the same as for non-Hispanic white people.

Black people, however, stick out like a sore thumb no matter where they are. Even in Arizona, where blacks are only 4.5% of the population, about 300,000 total, their annual gun violence rate approaches 25 per 100,000.

“Gun violence” does not make sense as a metric. I am sure that you have seen my posts on “hospital deaths”.

The only metric that makes sense here is overall murder rates and overall violent crime.

If “gun violence” went up, but overall violent crime and murder rates went down, that would be a good thing.

The trouble is that there are no clear statistics of any kind. Starting with killer statistics, so many killers are of “unknown race”. Hospital deaths are limited to in hospital, not dead on scene (I imagine, though I could be wrong), and then victim stats are a mess as well.

Add to it all that there is no standardized format for states to submit data to the FBI for their annual UCR.

That’s why I referred to “violence”, as this is a more subjective, police-level opinion. In some places, this is seen in the local “cop talk”, referencing things like black gang homicides as “UBDs” (”usual black deals”), so based on location, the police know which gangs are likely involved and who to look for.

It gets completely nuts in California, because their state recreation seems to be criminal gangs, ethnic hatred to the point of ethnic cleansing, and other bizarre confusions.
