Residents of a Houston neighborhood are being warned to stay away from giant African land snails after a woman found one in her garden and snapped a photo of it.
The snails, researchers warn, are potentially dangerous to touch, in part because they can carry meningitis. Scientists have warned anyone who comes in contact with them to wash their hands thoroughly.
"They also carry a parasitic disease that can cause a lot of harm to humans and sometimes even death," Autumn Smith-Herron, director of the Institute for the Study of Invasive Species at Sam Houston State University, told NBC Houston affiliate KPRC.
A woman gardening in the Briar Forest neighborhood of Houston found the snail and notified workers at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center who deal with invasive plants. It is the first reported sighting of the mollusk in Texas, and no one seems to know how it got there.
The giant snails can lay 100 eggs per month, and though only one has been found, it is believed more are in the area.
Jack Fendrick, who lives near where the slimy giant was discovered, said he will do his part to warn of the potentially deadly snails.
"I think most kids especially would look at a big snail and want to touch it," he said. "That's scary."
LOL!
No, it's just another attempt by the media to continue the fevered pitch of 'fear' that socialists feed off of.
Racoons carry ringworm. ALL fecal matter carries bacteria of some kind. Now these snails are to be feared because they MIGHT have a form of menigitis?
I guess the headline Do What Your Mama Taught You and Wash Your Hands After Touching Poop or Critters wouldn't serve their purpose quite so well. :-)
That’s Sheila Jackson-Lee without her triple crown weave.
Boooshes fault! It happened in Texas and is reported on NBC, so it MUST be Boooshes fault! (sarc)
If left unchecked, the states feral hog tally which was averaged at roughly 2.6 million animals will more than triple in five years.
Using landowner surveys in 2010 from 139 of Texas 254 counties, the report found that the estimated reduction on feral hogs statewide from trapping, hunting and other methods was 753,646, or 29 percent of the population. Even at that same harvest rate, the report states that the population would still double in five years.
I’m from Louisiana. If I thought about all the things I have eaten, I would have starved long ago.
Since Hussein is in charge, it cannot be heaven, so if this is the afterlife, we are all in the other place! We know that under Hussein’s watch, America is going to the otherplace ‘in a handbasket’.
At least they didn’t advise everyone to run to higher ground if you see one....
If you take off the window screens you don't even have to go outside to shoot them, just don't forget to raise the window!
However, the reported snail got away before anyone was able to capture it.
just how fast do these giant snails move?
I drove by that this morning... thought they were setting up for the Art Car Ball...
Sounds to me like, if they planned smart, they’d have a case of “too much food” in Texas.
We are taking about 3/4 of a million a year and they still bread too fast to stop the population growth.
They move at blinding speeds... and have great fangs.
You probably had immunity built in........
There are several places that purchase and accept the hogs for meat. The challenge is they want a live hog to show it was healthy. The hogs are not that cooperative. We even have a hog trap set up on my kid’s high school grounds.
They told everyone to “Shelter in place”........
I came home late one night and the automatic porch light didn't go on. I was groping my way up the walk and fell in a two foot deep hole.
The hogs had pulled up 10 feet of paving blocks and started excavating, must of been some kind of grubs under the blocks.
So perhaps you understand this isn't an easily solved problem?
We are trying:
