An understaffed Oakland police force struggling with rising crime and a court order to curb officer misconduct is again looking for a leader, after Police Chief Howard Jordan abruptly stepped down Wednesday, citing an unspecified medical reason.
Jordan, who announced his departure in a morning letter to the rank and file, was a longtime Oakland police veteran who led the force for 19 months, a tumultuous time of Occupy protests, budget cuts and wide alarm over killings and robberies. The department's failure to finish reforms ordered a decade ago after a police abuse scandal prompted a federal judge in March to appoint a compliance director with the power to seek Jordan's firing.
The chief's announcement stunned many at City Hall, including City Council members who had met with Jordan in closed session Tuesday afternoon and were unaware of any health problems. Mayor Jean Quan, who appointed Jordan to the chief's job, said she "personally was very saddened and surprised."

Can’t have it both ways.
Cops are hated for doing nothing and hated for doing something.
In my neck of the woods we solved the problem by eliminating the need for cops.
LOL, but I have a suspicion that wouldn’t scale up to Oakland!
That said, I think anybody who takes that job would be an idiot. The bottom line is, no matter how heinous were wrong the suspects are in nearly any situation, you won’t get me support from either the community where the politicians there.
The occupy protests are a perfect example of cops caught between liberal occupiers, city government, and business owners.
They pepper spray the occupiers, the mayor throws a tantrum, then occupiers feel emboldened and trash businesses with police knowing that city government won’t have their backs.
Better report here:
Yeah. It is a lose-lose situation, as I see it.
Pfft. Liberalism. Live by the sword...their cities will all turn out like Detroit. Sad.
In Oakland, a documented history of past gang affiliation is NOT grounds for disqualification as candidacy for employment with their PD..!!
Mull THAT one over, next time you’re pulled over....
I don’t plan on visiting Oakland - ever.
Yes, anyone who takes that job expecting to actually *do* the job would be an idiot. But those whose cynical back-up plan is to scam the system using the union cash machine voters and politicians have stupidly put into place may be on to something.
Increasingly I see life in America as an intelligence test. You can keep on slaving away and paying taxes to support public employee unions and the indolent or you can put your ingenuity to work figuring out ways to survive "off the grid."
That's my strategy too. Only problem is: I'm worried that Oakland is going to be visiting me.
re: Oakland...let it burn....
Well, I don’t know about all that, but I do think that any dispassionate observer would only have to look at the dynamic involved in the liberal politics in Oakland and the propensity of both private citizens and politicians to completely take the side of wrongdoers.
I think that your IQ would have to be pretty low not to see this and wonder to yourself “Hey What do these people expect me to actually do If I take this job?”
But, as to your point that we, as paying taxpayers are being taken to the cleaners on purpose by people who game the system Well, it’s nothing new. It is as if every new example of is being used as a simple application to rip off the scab and rub salt, waiting for it to heal a little bit again before repeating the process.
Nothing personal, but your comment that people who haven’t “found a way to live off the grid” are failing and intelligence test of some kind and are therefore stupid is unnecessary. I think you could’ve found a way to make that point another way. Just my opinion.
In your particular situation, you may have found an acceptable way in your personal or professional life to do this, but I don’t think that it is equally easy for everyone.
I do think that Oakland will burn. It will go the way of Detroit.
And I think many large, liberal cities will do the same once the money runs out.
Boy, this is just a bundle of refreshing sunshine on Free Republic here tonight.
I was in Oakland last night and will be there tomorrow for work.
The town is done.
Good luck & stay safe.
re: Oakland...let it burn....
BS! There are a lot of decent folks in Oakland including my daughter. You have $h!t or brains!
Oakland is like a war zone in some areas yet the Alameda County Adminstrator will walk out with a pension of over $400,000 ++++ when she retires the office for the ALameda County Supervisors is located in Oakland yet crime is high in that city. Oakland has not been able to hold onto a chief in that city for along time before him, one lasted 2 years before that 4 years (and that one had it with the supervisors of Oakland). I don’t blame him I blame the leaders in Oakland the police have their hands tied behind their backs they are darned if they do and darned if they dont, I think one day Oakland will become detroit but maybe they already have Oakland in our local newspaper was listed as “robbery capital in the nation” I don’t live in Oakland but live close to it and most of the crime comitted in my city the people commiting the crime are from Oakland.
I concur and I think it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better. Stock up on beans, bullets, and band-aids.
