True. They could have put the F-16s on alert at Sigonella. Or, they could have them on alert at Aviano. Or they could have had a tanker or two on alert at Sigonella for any contingency. The tanker could have met them and refueled them on the way to Libya.

This wasn't rocket science. All it required was just a bit of planning and the deployment of a few aircraft.
