(CNN) -- Detectives on Saturday arrested the 12-year-old brother of Leila Fowler on a homicide charge in connection with his 8-year-old sister's death, Calaveras County, California, Sheriff Gary Kuntz said.
The brother -- who Kuntz did not name, but did speak publicly after his sister's death -- was arrested at 5:10 p.m. (8:10 p.m. ET) at a county sheriff's office substation in his hometown of Valley Springs, according to the sheriff.
"Citizens of Calaveras County can sleep a little better tonight," Kuntz said.
Leila Fowler and her brother were said to be alone on Saturday, April 27, in their family's northern California home when she was found dead. The 12-year-old told police that he'd seen an intruder leaving the home, then found his sister suffering from stab wounds.

My heart breaks for the family.........they have lost a daughter and a son.
It's the people, stupid!
So much evil in the world, such sad times. Family is supposed to be there for each other. I have three older brothers and they would to this day do anything to protect me. I cannot imagine that her brother savagely murdered her...
About thirty years ago my sister said she had a dream/vision that people would be born in this world who had no soul.
I asked her what she meant and she said “they would not know right from wrong”.
I am thinking she was right.
I think we are long past the time for revisiting the Laws about age and willful acts. The Law likes to pretend that 9-12 year olds cannot understand their actions in such serious matters. Clearly, this boy knew what he did, knew it was wring, was savvy enough to make up a story, and told the story to police and on camera. This is not some little lamb, incapable of understanding right and wrong.
I always thought that the brother of Jon Benet Ramsey, Burke Ramsey, killed her. The Ramsey family protected him.
IMO this was a similar case.
Just like the worker in the Gossell trial that said she didn’t know murdering babies was wrong because she was told to do it. I don’t understand it.
This was speculated the moment that it happened..that the brother was the only one to see this supposed intruder..and when you kill someone with a knife its often someone the victim knows since its so personal
They lost a daughter but the son was a selfish POS, don’t you think?
This has been going on since Cain killed Abel.
The heart of man is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked. Who can know it?
Without a heart transplant, and a renewed spirit from The Lord - we are all prone to evil.
Ephesians 2:1-3 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
They lost a son, because he did what he did......
I’ve had my doubt’s about the kid’s story from the beginning.
What a little psycho.
He knows just what to say - a touching, spiritual message. He must be very self-possessed and observant of other's reactions.
Yeah, I know what you meant dude.... And it’s ridiculous.
Sweet merciful Jesus, please save us from ourselves.
FWIW, some stories have said he’s a stepbrother
Respect to your sister, but I’m not sure I believe anyone’s born without a soul. I believe right and wrong are mostly taught concepts, though, and of course the brother could just be a homocidal maniac... Maybe that’s what your sister meant, more mentally unbalanced kids being born? On that point, I may have to agree.
I do know there are many children that are born without being surrounded by a loving family. I saw a lot of it in the poor, rural county where I was raised (back then a majority of black folks, if that matters) and later in Russia where there are so many orphans... You can see the empty soul-less stare you get when looking into their eyes. I’m confident most wouldn’t have that stare, or the savage mindset, if they were raised right.
It’s really very sad. But we can’t give up on them.
“Each man’s death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.”
God bless that little girl. I hope her needless suffering was very brief...
I seem to recall the DNA did not match any family members???
You recall correctly.
