Defense Department civilians to go on unpaid leave for 11 days Photo 10:29am EDT
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel will announce on Tuesday that most of the Defense Department's 800,000 civilian employees will be placed on unpaid leave for 11 days, as the military scrambles to comply with budget cutting targets by the end of September.
Hagel will announce the decision at a town hall meeting with Defense Department employees scheduled for 2:30 p.m. EDT (1630 GMT).
The furlough is shorter than the earlier estimates of 14 days issued in March and 22 days in February, but is still going to be deeply unpopular among the Pentagon workforce.
"He made this decision after carefully studying all of the options," said one U.S. defense official, adding that Hagel was not happy about the move but that it was necessary to meet budget cutting targets.
A second U.S. defense official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said more than 600,000 employees would go on unpaid leave but could not offer a precise figure. They would not start their leave for several weeks, the official added.

When do the commie dirtbags at the EPA go on unpaid leave?
Meanwhile, back at the WH Michelle is paying her 36+ aides to plan her next vacation and to pick vegetables.
Hooboy...gonna have a bunch of reservists trying to get additional days this summer to make up for the furlough. One of many reasons I never took the GS or GG route after getting off active duty.
Why don’t they do the country a favor and furlough the rogue IRS for 11 days.....or 11,000 days!
The ones I know, will still do their work.
Dear DoD Employees,
As a former DoD employee myself, (NAVPRO GRUMMAN AEROSPACE before it left Long Island), I have the following words:
1. Your boss hates you!
2. Your so-called beloved AFGE union took your money, and gave it to your boss.
3. The old idea of “voting to keep your job” died, because your boss hates the military, which includes you, again.
4. Should you have voted “the union way or no way”, guess who put that banana where it is now? YOU DID!
Lastly, I hope you folks have enough money in the bank to pay your bills for three months. That was a lesson I learned, when in the past as a DoD/NAVPRO employee, we at Grumman were all furloughed, for over three months.
The pretense is that there is no place else to cut out of the DoD budget.
That is pure BS.
I’ve heard that every branch of the military except the Army found enough money to pay all the workers.
But when the Army found out, they complained to the Defense Secretary that it wouldn’t be fair for the Army contractors to get furloughed if nobody else was.
And Hagel, being an idiot, agreed, and decided that all the branches had to go through with the furloughs even though they didn’t need them.
So we have several guys we know who are now going to be furloughed even though they have plenty of money and their jobs are critical. All to be “fair”, because we all know that is the most important job of the military. Well that and making sure gays and lesbians are comfortable, and christians don’t pester people by trying to give them the keys to Eternal Life.
