Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) reacted to Republican outrage at the IRS targeting of conservative groups Tuesday, saying that when the Internal Revenue Service targeted liberal organizations, “we didn’t hear a single Republican grandstand the issue then.” “It wasn’t long ago that the IRS inappropriately targeted the NAACP, Greenpeace, and a California church which was really progressive, called the All Saints Church in Pasadena, Calif. It was interesting. At that time, we didn’t hear a single Republican grandstand the issue then. Where was their outrage when groups on the other side of the political spectrum were

What is your point, Mr. Searchlight? Are we not supposed to be outraged?

That is unfair. Nixon was no traitor, even with his flaws!

I doubt the examples Reid cites ever happened because, if they had, his media buddies would have screamed bloody murder over it. Since they didn’t, I’d have to assume it is just another of Harry’s fantasies.

I don’t know about the others, but the NAACP was audited because they were engaging in political advocacy, which was prohibited by the section of the tax code under which they were incorporated.

It is a different section of tax code from that which was sought by the conservative groups. While still limiting, it isn’t as limiting as the one used by the NAACP.

If the NAACP had created a separate organization under the different tax code, they might have avoided their IRS troubles.

It is not even the same issue, the NAACP was using funds for CAMPAIGNING which you can’t do as a non-profit. The lawmaker, Harry Reid should know the difference.

They weren’t targeted, they were audited for illegal activity, not just for requesting tax exempt status and stalled because of certain keywords in their name.

Lying Harry Reid!

******

In 2004, the NAACP was hit with an audit over accusations of improper political activity for criticizing the Bush administration.

“We have received information that during your 2004 convention in Philadelphia, your organization distributed statements in opposition of George W. Bush for the office of presidency,” the IRS wrote in an audit notice that the group released to the media at the time.

Auditors also notified the group that it could be subject to a 10 percent tax for political expenditures as well as a 2.5 percent tax on any manager that signed off on the political activity.

Rules don’t apply to the left, obviously...

2004

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service has begun reviewing the tax-exempt status of the NAACP, citing concerns over a speech by Chairman Julian Bond at the group’s annual convention last July.

In an Oct. 8 letter released Thursday, the IRS told the NAACP it had received information that Bond conveyed “statements in opposition of George W. Bush for the office of presidency” and specifically “condemned the administration policies of George W. Bush in education, the economy and the war in Iraq.”

The letter reminded the association that tax-exempt organizations are legally barred from supporting or opposing any candidate for elective office.

Bond’s speech on July 11 included sharp criticism of the Republican Party, Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney for their positions on issues important to black Americans.

********

The IRS was holding up issuing tax exempt status to the conservative groups (by asking for more private information which was none of their business) not auditing them for POLITICAL activity which is against IRS rules like what the NAACP did.

VERY DIFFERENT!!!

Harry, get back to me when the IRS demands the donor list & other private information from the NAACP. But you will see these talking points which have been issued to distract from the facts!

Harry, that happened a long time ago. What difference does it make now?

That would be such an AWESOME thing for Boehner or McConnell to say, that you know neither ever will!

Here's to hoping Rush or someone else will pick up on it!

Was there a blanket targeting of left-wing groups, or did those 3 examples do something to prompt an investigation, Harry?

Thanks for that information. Now I see why the idiot Bond was spewing his nonsense on Hannity. It’s so funny to hear them still clinging to the racist angle and citing the passing of obamacare as their evidence!
