A massive emergency response is under way in the Granbury area, where at least six people were killed and dozens injured by up to three tornadoes as a relentless storm system raked across North Texas on Wednesday evening.
At an overnight press conference, Hood County Sheriff Roger Deeds did not have details on the six who died. He did say that two of them were not near homes.
Deeds said the death toll could rise as 14 people remain unaccounted for and nearby rural areas just outside the Rancho Brazos subdivision had not been searched thoroughly as crews did what they could in the dark.
In the hardest hit subdivision this morning, police and sheriff's deputies have blocked off the neighborhood where several homes were damaged or destroyed. Debris littered the roads approaching the subdivision, and volunteers with the Red Cross were out in force, seeking to help those in need find shelter and other provisions.
The sheriff added that many residents quickly left the area after the storm to stay with friends or relatives, so it was difficult to know where everyone went. Those from the damaged areas were encouraged to register at the Red Cross’s Safe & Well program so officials and families would know who was all right.
Deeds said 250 people were taken from the Granbury area, about 90 of them from the Rancho Brazos subdivision. Sixteen were taken to Fort Worth hospitals and 38 to the local hospital in Granbury. Fourteen were admitted there.
Deeds said the area was hit by as many three tornadoes.
"It's definitely a nightmare," Deeds said. "We knew it was going to be a tough night in Hood County."

This is one of two things stopping me from moving to Texas. I’ll pass on the tornadoes thanks.
I thought there would be one, but I searched for Dallas and twisters.
I’ve been to Granbury many times. Nice small town atmosphere, even as they began to build more of a “resort feel” to the town. Nice new hotels, great lake, etc. My wife and I spent a Valentine’s Day weekend there a couple years back.
Like all of Texas, they’re a hearty breed and will recover, but the pain of losing loved ones never really goes away. Praying for Granbury and surrounding towns that were hit.
I did hear that my first ex-wife is ok... drat it.

I was searching FR for the thread too, and happened to see it on the message board.
My home stomping grounds in Hood County. My family members are ok but pictures this morning look like area near the Pecan Plantation club house. Praying for the people there!
My dad and his second wife lived in Pecan Plantation, and my step-sister and her family still do. I can’t remember if they live near the club house, though. They live in the area that has the airplane hangers by the houses - glideslope court. Is that near the clubhouse ?
Actually, I just heard back from her- they are ok. Thankfully.
