There are many serious unanswered questions, and the wider issue is that there was either a callous willingness to allow events to unfold as they did, taking American lives or there was wide spread incompetence that allowed the taking of American lives.
The middle ground is not a suitable defensive position in this inquiry.
They were willing to let them die, since the kidnap-trade plan collapsed. You’re right; there’s no middle ground.
