An old trick my father taught me was always to hold just a few deductions in reserve. He got audited once and they ended up owing him about $50. They never bothered him again. It wasn't paying him that they hated so much as the time wasted in the audit.

My brother, OTOH, was very aggressive about taking every deduction to which he was entitled. He got audited multiple times even though I don't recall that he ever ended up paying them any extra taxes. It was like they were on a vendetta against him.

I think my Dad had the right idea by holding just a few deductions in reserve, even though it meant overpaying them over his lifetime. The time loss and aggravation from just one audit is a loss of more than $50, even for what it could buy back in the 1970s.
