Andrea Rebello (r.), here with her twin Jessica in an Instagram photo, was killed by the friendly fire of a police officer during a shootout with home invader Dalton Smith.

The Hofstra University student killed during a home invasion robbery was the victim of friendly fire from a veteran cop who unleashed a barrage of bullets when the armed intruder pointed a gun at him, Nassau County police announced tonight.

Andrea Rebello was accidentally shot in the head while career criminal Dalton Smith had her in a headlock and used her as a human shield while trying to escape out the back door, Det. Lt. John Azzata said.

The unidentified cop fired eight rounds, seven of which struck and killed Smith, and one of which hit Rebello, he said.

8 rounds?!?

What happened to the new law that you're only allowed to have 7 in a gun? Oh right this was a cop.

What a damn shame. If he'd only had 7, the victim would still be alive.

Thank God she was being protected by a trained LEO, think how bad it could have turned out for her if it was a homeowner with a gun! A truly sad ending.

> The beloved sorority girl ... was rarely seen without her twin sister, Jessica, friends and teachers said. “They were always together — like Velcro,”...

So, more than likely, the cop killed TWO girls, because that surviving twin's life has been destroyed as well. Twins share all sorts of special connections, and no doubt the survivor will never regain the happiness she could have had with her twin alive.

This is sad in so many ways... Prayers up for the surviving twin and her family.

It’s the victim’s fault. She shouldn’t have been in her own home to begin with. /s

I’d like to know why 6 shots didn’t bring him down. Did the cop miss him altogether and only one shot hit him? I know the perp had her close to him but couldn’t they wait until they had him at a better angle. Her sister and parents’ life are destroyed now as well as this officer’s life because of this hardened criminal.

So much for Gov Cuomo’s background check for the gun the criminal had. He was only released from jail earlier this year. I’d like to see some blame go to Cuomo - since they rushed the bill through in the heat of the night to make himself look ‘tough’. He’s such an arrogant POS.

You’re assuming she was killed with the last shot......could have been the first or any of the seven that followed. Better question is why he did not know what he was firing at....I realize it was a stressful environment but what is the training for. Job one when rescuing a victim is not to kill the victim!!!!

My question is - was it the 7th that killed her? The perp was holding her close to him. So the 8th round finally got him? This is so sad for all concerned there are no adequate words for it.

Take the guns from the police. As Joe Biden said “If it only saves one life . . .”

The REAL, real question is why this animal was out roaming the street in the first place? - a 14 year track record of violent crimes and the ‘justice’ system somehow so fit to let him continue to wander the streets hunting for more prey....

It must be New York’s, 101 strikes and you are out law....

...probably wasn’t his fault anyway, after all his great-great-great-great-great grandmother may have been a slave.

Police are armed for THEIR protection, not yours. They are under NO legal obligation to protect you from the ‘bad guys’. Unfortunately the officer in this instance apparently ‘sacrificed’ the victims life to protect his own.....but as in the words of a VERY smart, VERY ethical political icon—”What difference does it make now?”

What’s the over/under that the uLEO’s first shot was purposely to the head of the girl, immobilizing the “hostage” situation, then 7 crisps taps to the felonious black man?

That may be the policy...
