Spoke to Panetta and Dempsey around 4 pm.

6 hours later spoke to Clinton at 10 pm.

Clinton comes out with the first YouTube statement 30 mins later.

Who was Obama talking to...who told him to tell Clinton to go with the YouTube story?

I’m betting he was in his bedroom on the phone with Axelrod and Jarrett.

But who was giving him info about what was going on on the ground in Libya. It wasn't Panetta or Dempsey.

My bet is that he was getting his raw info from someone in the Middle East.

Excellent questions.

And “President Waldo” - good one! I also like President Passerby.

My entry:

I’m guessing that this was a planned operation that went horribly wrong. I think the kidnapping was supposed to be staged, but the mob got out of control.

One piece of missing data is not what time Stevens was killed, but what time the WH realized that Stevens was killed. I think Zippy went to bed (maybe Hillary did, too) thinking all was going to plan. They only got word the next morning that Stevens was dead.

If it looked like things were going according to plan and they didn’t find out until the next morning that Stevens was dead, that could explain why they went to bed, why they seemed unconcerned, and why there were no orders to send a rescue mission.

That would also explain the subsequent panic and need to cover up once they realized that the plan had failed.

The only other alternatives that I can see are:
1. Callous disregard for Americans in danger.
2. Premeditated murder (by proxy mob). Stevens death was part of the plan.

None of these 3 options look good.

While the ambassador and a staffer were murdered, had it not been for the sacrifice of the two former SEALs, The entire group present would have been thrown to the wolves.

It wasn't "just" four Americans, nor "just" an Ambassador and staff, but all those who survived as well who were abandoned to their fate, had not two heroes intervened.

The SEALs are the best our country has to offer. I can’t even look at the photos of the casualties of the downed “SEAL” helicopter.

They were THE heroes.

The issue is that our electorate is uninformed. It’s why Benghazi doesn’t mean anything to them.

We have 51 dead in Oklahoma as of this morning from the storm. We have dead SEALs and military every week , from the Mideast.

It’s awful.

So what makes the four dead at the embassy different?

As individuals they are no different. And compared with the schoolchildren who perished yesterday in OKC, forget it.

So people forget about them from time to time. They say,
“four dead Americans, oh yeah, Wasn’t that in that place with the B and the Z? Well, what were they doing over there anyway? What did they expect?”

And they get forgotten. And then, “oh,yeah there was something about Hillary? It must be political.”

And yet, it doesn’t go away.

We’ve gone into thinking that we decide things as we go along. Hillary and BO met them on the tarmac because they are nice and they’re compassionate and BO and H! are stand up people when they feel like it.

No. They had to meet them because they were the embassy staff. The brave and dedicated former SEALs were honored with this presidential recognition. They were not, reportedly, part of the embassy staff.

What’s getting lost in this, is that the State dept. not Hillary, as powerful as she’d like to be, and not confined to the head of State, and the State dept still IS bigger than she, even while she was in charge, sent them over to Benghazi.

The embassy staff represents the US in country. They are afforded security and are given US housing. If they are hurt or killed in country it goes up to the President as they are his representatives in country Stat doesn’t just get involved because they are wonderful. They HAVE to. The embassy staff works for them. State is responsible for meeting them at repatriation and then explaining to the American people what happened. “What difference does it make” doesn’t and will not cut it.

If people realized this, it might go a lot quicker as congress is allowed to play around with this as much as the Executive branch.

The embassy was overrun. The Libyans know it as does the MB and AQ, Egypt, Syria and whoever is left in this country to pay attention to Government 101.

It’s not about four dead. It’s huge. It’s about the Embassy, whether H! and BO want to fundamentally transform the Govt or not, they haven’t yet.

We are still under the same rules that were in place when Tony Mendez worked very hard to get the Foreign Service workers out of Iran, and we’re probably in that same fight.

So, IBD gets it right. And it’s why this is not going away.

And it’s why this is not going away.

It shouldn't. Ever. Not only is this a stain on the history of the executive branch, it has showed the world that our people, even an American Ambassador can be tortured and killed at leisure and the US won't do squat.

Not one of our citizens is safe overseas from this kind of crap because if there was no rescue attempt, and no retaliation for an Ambassador, there won't be anything for just an ordinary American.

That is the message these pikers have sent. It bodes ill for the status of "the world's most powerful nation" and has elevated the petty warlords who made the attack in status in their world.

So, I’m just on this.

I want journalists and pundits to call this what it is.

The take down of the US Embassy.

Technically, it was not the Embassy, but a rented facility used to conduct unofficial official business: an 'annex', or a 'mission'. Still, that is no excuse for the dwindling security for diplomatic personnel in the face of an increasing threat, nor the abandonment of the personnel there by the US Government in a moment of crisis.

That the former SEALs were lasing the mortar position indicates they believed someone in the AO had the ability to put steel on target. That fire/air support was not forthcoming, and only their actions permitted the people who did escape to do so.

As has been pointed out here, only, repeat, ONLY the POTUS had the ability to grant cross border authority. The buck stops there.

Help me out here. I’m closer to the situation than you are, and way closer than what the most in the media call it.

From IBD:

“. . .murdered our ambassador to Libya. . .”

From Wikipedia:

John Christopher Stevens (April 18, 1960 – September 12, 2012) was an American diplomat and lawyer who served as the U.S. Ambassador to Libya from June 2012 to September 12, 2012.[3][4] Stevens was killed when the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, was attacked on September

What help do you require?

Yes, Stevens was our Ambassador. (And as such should have had decent security wherever he was).

No, the building ("compound", actually) he was at was not The American Embassy there, even though our State Department leased and used it.

That compound has been described as a "diplomatic mission" or an "annex" also. Wiki is open source and frequently contains errors, some of which seem insignificant to the semantically impaired.

It was an tempt at politeness. It seems that your point is off in terms of the Embassy being completely different from a consulate as far as security and the consequences of security failure, see The Executive Branch meeting the casualties on the tarmac. They did not do this because of good character. It was required.

In any case, a mortally neglected consulate is quite different from “dead Americans”, a regard given to travelling students on a Eurail pass, which, in this case, just don’t command the attention due to the Consulate (equal to the embassy for security, esp when housing the Ambassador, according to the citation below, and according to common sense.

As federal agents, all DSS Special Agents have the power to arrest, carry firearms, . . . DSS Special Agents protect the U.S. Secretary of State and foreign dignitaries.

When assigned to domestic field offices, DSS Special Agents are responsible for. . . providing protection for the United States Secretary of State and . . . U.S. missions, embassies, and consular posts.
