President Barack Obama's former chief of staff, Jack Lew, the current treasury secretary, said today at a Capitol Hill hearing that he was aware "questions had been raised" about the IRS when he was at the White House:

Jack Lew - wasn't he the turd responsible for most of those frivolous accusations against Sarah Palin in Alaska?

I bet he's also responsible for setting fire to Sarah's church.

Jack Lew was confirmed as Treasury Secretary at the very end of February. That means the White House had to have been aware of the targeting before that confirmation, say January or February.

I can’t find it now, but I recall seeing where Carney claimed that discussions about this did not go further back than April, I think.
