Jay Carney: Some press criticism of White House 'legitimate'

By: Jennifer Epstein May 22, 2013 01:43 PM EDT

The White House has tried to provide to the press as much information as quickly as possible in its account of the IRS’s targeting of conservative political groups — but some criticism is “legitimate,” press secretary Jay Carney said Wednesday.

“There have been some legitimate criticisms about how we’re handling this,” Carney said during his daily press briefing. “And I say ‘legitimate’ because I mean it.”

“We are endeavoring to pursue those two objectives in an environment that really never has existed before, in terms of the speed of information flow, the rapidity with which information is conveyed and then released,” he added.

After days of offering an evolving narrative on which members of the administration had learned about the Treasury Department inspector general’s review of the IRS before the president had, the White House timeline stayed static Wednesday.

Carney did offer some details on the 30-day review that Danny Werfel, the acting IRS commissioner who started Wednesday, will lead.

“The president, through the secretary of Treasury, has insisted that the new acting commissioner conduct this top-down 30-day review. It is a fact that today is his first day on the job, and I think it’s safe to say that that clock starts ticking today,” Carney said, referring further questions to the IRS and the Treasury Department.

Carney declined to comment on IRS official Lois Lerner’s decision to take the Fifth rather than answer questions at the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing she attended on Wednesday morning.

Those in power say The White House, like it was a person. The White House can do nothing — The people in The White House do a lot of things and Carney needs to start naming those people. How many people work in The White House?

We will decide what’s legitimate and what isn’t.

Shut up Carney. You’re as big a butt kisser as that other clown Gibbs.

Both of you ought to be ashamed of defending such a fascist.
