(Memphis) An elderly man in South Memphis woke up to a burglar in his home.

Police say he didn’t cower in fear, he shot the man hitting the burglar twice!

The alleged criminal is OK but he might have learned a lesson!

Mr. John Lewis says he was sleeping in his bedroom when he heard a noise out in his living room.

He peaked out his bedroom and found himself face-to-face with a burglar, “He told me about three times ‘close your door or I will shoot you. I got a gun.”

Lewis says he obeyed the burglar and went back in his bedroom, but when straight to where he hides his gun, “I came back out and I shot him.”

The 77-year-old fired three times, hitting Travis Weddle twice.

Police say when bullets grazed his chest and wounded his hand, Weddle ditched the 55-inch TV and got out of there,.

“He came out the door and hollered back ‘I left my keys in there’ His car was parked out here. A white Maxima.”

Grandpa wasn’t giving him the car keys so the injured burglar had to walk.

He got about a mile before calling police on himself saying he’d been shot!

He attempts to steal a TV, gets shot, then asks for the keys to the car.

If this had happened in Memphis, NY,

the state Cuomonista troopers would have have arrested the 77-yr-old for illegal hiding of 3 rounds over the mag limit in the burglar,

shooting an illegal assault rifle within 500 feet of a school and a farm building, and

grand theft auto of his car keys and

failure to report an incident of gun violence. yup.

“went straight to where he hides his gun,”

I think we have moved past “hides his gun”. It takes time to get your gun if it is hidden. He should have taken the gun with him when he peeked out the door. If the robber had put him in another room, he couldn't get his gun.

Evidently, he lives by himself so there was no reason to hide the gun. My loaded 38 special is by my chair - it is not hidden. I don't answer my door after dark. If someone tried to break in after dark, my gun is right there in the open to kill the sucker.

If I am upstairs in bed, another loaded 38 is on the table by my bed out in the open. My house is hardened so it would take a robber a very long time to get in my house and I would hear the commotion, but if he did get in and come up to my bedroom, he has to get passed the locked door to my bedroom and he gets killed the minute he opens that door.

The point is, if you can't make one move and the gun is in your hand, you may lose the battle with the robber. No way am I hiding my guns.

Police say he didn’t cower in fear, he shot the man hitting the burglar twice!

If some man is hitting, not once but multiple times, an unwanted burglar in my home, I'd be inclined to let him continue to hit the burglar. Then, when he tired, I'd be inclined to shoot the burglar till dead. Then, treat the helping, and no doubt tired, man to a beer in the local pub.

Anyway, despite the writing in the article, great news with a great ending.

Near to my bed is my 20 gauge Ithica (not an auto burglar model unfortunately) with 3 buck, 40 cal Bersa with 135 gr JHPs, and my smith 66 with 110gr JHPs, all within arms length reach. My alarm sounded a few months ago, no problem just a malfuncting sensor, I was up in a second, got the 40 and gave my wife the 20 gauge and went sight seeing about the house. That is our plan and it worked fine. Our motto is no one leaves unless carried by six. BTW, we have no one else at home so not worried about loaded unlocked firearms out of the safe.

The resident should have followed this Burger King employee’s example.

They got the state topography wrong. The peeks are in East Tennessee, not Memphis.

The 38 by my bed has bird shot as the first bullet which will be aimed so the eyes get it and that won’t take much aim, then it’s hollow points after that.

The 38 special downstairs has hollow points. Then, there is the 22 LR PINK rifle loaded with hollow points downstairs and it comes upstairs at night.
