On the Beach, Men Are More Likely to Approach a Tattooed Woman

There are a lot of reasons to think twice before getting something permanently drawn on your body. One is that people still treat those with tattoos differently than those without. One recent study, for instance, looked at how men treat women with tattoos. What they found was that men are more likely to approach a woman with a tattoo and more likely to expect a date or sex with that woman.

Here’s how the study worked. Researchers had women place temporary tattoos on their lower backs and sent them to a well-known beach. The women were instructed to lay on the beach reading a book, staying on their stomachs so that the tattoo was visible. There were two parts to this study. In the first one, once the woman was in place, researchers watched and counted how many men approached her. In the second, once the woman assumed her position, a male researcher walked around the beach and asked random men whether they would be willing to “respond to three questions about a girl somewhere on the beach.” Every single man they approached said yes.

Here’s how the researchers summarized their results:

Two experiments were conducted. The first experiment showed that more men (N = 220) approached the tattooed confederates and that the mean latency of their approach was quicker. A second experiment showed that men (N = 440) estimated to have more chances to have a date and to have sex on the first date with tattooed confederates.

Interestingly, the study did refute an earlier finding about women with tattoos. In 2007, researchers from the University of Liverpool showed that men rated women with tattoos as physically less attractive, but sexually more promiscuous than those without. In this study, researchers found that physical attractiveness—as rated by the men on the beach who agreed to answer questions about the woman—wasn’t impacted by the tattoo. Another study in 2005 also found that tattoos don’t change attractiveness, but do negatively impact a person’s credibility, regardless of their gender.

So tattoos might not be bad for picking up dudes at the beach, but they might impact what those dudes think of you in the long run.

My ex had one of those cute butterfly ones. It looks like a condor now, so I guess that makes her look even more promiscuous?

Me neither. It is a form of mutilation. If I want to see art, I'll go to the museum. But that is just my opinion and to each his or her own.

If I weren’t married, women with tats would be at the bottom of my list. For many reasons.

Here’s a reason no one mentions often; Hep C is significantly more common in the tattooed population.

CDC says the incidence of Hep C in the baby boomer group is high. Reason? IMO probably because of tats and the number that got them in the 60s and 70s. Personally I wouldn’t trust ANYONE to stick a needle into me for that reason alone. And I’d not want to stick anything of mine in a woman with ink without her getting a blood test first.

There was a comedian in the 80s who said that when he was at a nightclub looking to pick up a woman for a one night stand, he would always look for the one with the tattoo. To him it said “I’m willing to make a mistake.”

Sad that the tattoos still pretty much mean the same thing but so many more girls have them now.

Now let me get this straight. If a woman displays a billboard on her butt advertising “easy lay”, she will attract male attention in a carnal way?!

I am really glad money was spent on this study. It must’ve brought some light into the researchers’ dull lives!

I guess over time the meaning of such a thing can change. But otoh maybe being a tramp is just becoming more acceptable.

I don’t like it either.

At first I thought she had argyria, but that would look more appealing than the reality.

well doesnt it make sense that not only girls with tattoos are easy so are guys so unless they are all doing each there are 20% easy and at least 20% looking for them so 2+2=40

20% would seem to be a low estimate. Total population, perhaps. The young people, probably far higher.

The young men cruising the beaches looking for hook-ups are probably inked up as well.

I have had to resign myself to the fact that we will have a large number of future adults with tatts.

Do I think it is attractive? No. But, truthfully, my friend’s daughter has lots and lots of tattoos, even a sleeve. (her wedding was a trip!) She also dresses very Goth. But she made excellent grades thru high school and college, has a great career and family. And is normal as they come. She just looks a little strange.
