Israeli soldiers of the Ultra-Orthodox battalion Netzah Yehuda of the army's Kfir Brigade brigade take part in a swearing-in ceremony. While military service is compulsory in Israel tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox are currently exempted from servicePicture: EPA

To the Guardian any Jew in Israel that keeps Kosher and wears a yarmulka is "ultra-orthodox".
So if all of the people in the battalion behave exactly as this man with a beard and peyos, is that all that makes him “ultra”?
Peyos and tallit don’t make someone ultra, but IMHO they are a clear sign that one is. However I am not Jewish, just trying to learn, that’s why I asked for “opinions”. Am I right? Do non-ultra orthodox Jews wear peyos and tallit? Just asking!
Define “ultra”. :)
Pish posh. It’s like how we are all “extremist right wing.” Tea parties are “radical.”
Orthodox is practicing Torah Judaism. There is only that. “Ultra” really is only applied from the outside, and usually refers to superficial things like hair, hats, etc. Those things are mere customs and not referencing them being “more” Jewish than any other.
Hmmm...As a Christian that believes in the entire Bible, having served 20 years in the US military active and Guard, knowing what I do now...I would rather volunteer for this unit. Just saying...
Non Orthodox don’t wear tsitsis or peyos daily (though my son did to his chabad day school). But there is no “ultra orthodox” denomination of Judaism. There are many types of Orthodox, often following a famous rebbe or lineage of rebbe, and the truth about the dress is called “custom.” There are a few ways to interpret the laws of cutting hair and beards, as well as how to dress modestly, etc. Like with any religion or practice, some customs end up holding more power than they should, and become superstitions.
But I have known very very righteous Jews who are not even orthodox, and I have known men with peyos and long beards who are cruel or dishonest (and one rabbi who molested children!). You want to use your dress to help you be good, not to hide behind it to do wrong.
The one thing that bothers me about the Hasidic strain of Judaism is the authoritarian control that the rebbes seem to have over their congregations.
Hasidic?
Great answer. Thank you!
There are other groups of religious Jews who believe in long peyos and beards who are not Hasidic. Why is one group of Jews who are religious considered ‘Ultra-Orthodox’ and others not?
In one picture in the bunch, there was a clean shaven man with a yarmulka who was also called ‘ultra-orthodox’ by the Guardian too.
As for the Guardian calling the clean-shaven soldier "ultra-orthodox"... well, that's the Guardian!
All are Orthodox and some are ultra-Orthodox. Just another attempt by a Euro-atheist news source to make religious Jews into fanatics to establish a false equivalence with the the murderous fundamentalist Muslims
Plus Jews worship G_d, while Muzzie worship a false prophet psychopath and the god he stole from the pagan Arabs
There is a lot of embellishment of the mitzva of Peyos by Hasidic Jews, but it is not only Hasidim that have them

Now y'all got me all confused! Yaelle says there is no ultra orthodox denomination of Judaism, you say that all soldiers are orthodox but only some are ultra- orthodox...
Don’t worry about it. There are ultra-Orthodox in Israel that libs in the West like to make a big deal about. Many of them are so apolitical. God and religious life and family are what they are 99% concentrated on
Many orthodox men these days go about shaved. Sometimes they are called modern orthodox. And the women don’t go around in wigs
