Authorities in Baltimore County were responding to a report of a train derailment in the White Marsh area that caused a loud explosion and sent a plume of white smoke into the sky that could be seen clearly from downtown Baltimore.
Baltimore County police posted to Twitter that a cargo train had derailed in the 7500 block of Lake Drive, near an industrial park. Initial reports were that no one was hurt, but hazardous material teams were responding to the scene.
Several industrial buildings were reported to have collapsed, and police were diverting traffic from Pulaski Highway.

Hmmmm coincidence? My initial suspicion is poor work practices on the part of east coast union ops/maintenance guys. But maybe I'm too cynical.....

This is in roughly that same location where a train derailed in the 90’s as the engineer was smoking marijuana.

You should try reading the article, then you won’t have to worry about your initial suspicion.
The train hit a truck that was blocking the track.

Must have been a big explosion. We live at least 8+ miles from the site and my wife said that it sounded like something had hit our house and it shook.

We live more than 8 miles away — in Kent County on the Eastern Shore — and we heard it and felt it.

Watching the news (WJZ) from home, they have pictures from the news chopper and the tracks are heavily damaged.
Strange that it was heard and felt across the bay in Kent County and in Carney, Baltimore County and in Pasadena in Anne Arundel County. That’s a big area. At work, by the city hall area in downtown Baltimore City we heard nothing at all.
