Ten members of Congress are urging the Washington Redskins to change their name because it is offensive to many Native Americans.
The representatives said Tuesday they've sent letters to Redskins owner Dan Snyder, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Redskins sponsor FedEx and the other 31 NFL franchises.
The letter to Snyder says that "Native Americans throughout the country consider the 'R-word' a racial, derogatory slur akin to the 'N-word' among African Americans or the 'W-word' among Latinos."
Among the group sending the letters are the leaders of the Congressional Native American Caucus: Tom Cole (R-Okla.(, and Betty McCollum (D-Minn.).
The nickname is the subject of a long-running legal challenge from a group seeking to have the team lose its trademark protection.

When the “N-word” is replaced by “African Americans” when does “African American” become insulting, after all, it means the same thing.
When I can sell a product labeled “Spic and Span” or have dinner at the “Cracker barrel” or call someone/group by their chosen moniker, speech becomes offensive by the identity of the speaker.

If I owned the team, I’d change the name to either the Washington Assault Rifles or the Washington Climate Change Deniers. That would make the commie libs wet their pants and probably shut up and stop annoying people.

Not true. Before libs got on the bandwagon, Indians had little problem with the word Redskins, particularly as it applied to the football team.
As someone who is chastised for being tall by my Pygmy friends and also a New Yorker I am offended by my football team’s name. I just didn’t know it. How dare they use the G word!

I was thinking more in the line of the "Washington Foreskins" since most are picks in that part of the country.
I agree. They should be the Landover (Maryland) Redskins.
What’s more offensive, an outdated reference for Native Americans, or the fact that we have congressmen wasting time (and our tax dollars) on this?
Name them the Inside-The-Beltway-Pin-Heads to honor congress.
