An American woman who went to Mexico for a family funeral has been stuck there for nearly a week, accused of smuggling drugs and facing a potential 10-year prison sentence.

But Yanira Maldonado's family says she is a victim of Mexican corruption, and is hopeful a judge may free her in the coming days. A hearing in her case that started on Tuesday concluded for the day without a decision on her freedom.

Six days earlier, Maldonado and her husband, Gary, were on a bus home to Goodyear, Ariz., after going to her aunt's funeral in Mexico. The bus was stopped at a military checkpoint outside Hermosillo, about 170 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border, their relatives said.

Never, ever go to Mexico for any reason and these things won’t happen. Surely there are enough horror stories people should know this.

” Never, ever go to Mexico for any reason....”

I lived in California for 30 years, and never went to Mexico.

Saw this reported on Fox News earlier today. She is a very lovely woman, Morman, with five or six kids. Drugs tapped under the seat she sat in on the bus! If you plan on leaving Mexico never go there for any reason!

She should be home in a couple of weeks. In Mexico you are guilty until proven innocent. They´ll find ways to prove her innocence, it might be found at the bank in currency notes, but it works. Best Justice system money can buy.

was just down at Boquillas Canyon crossing that just opened back up in Big Bend National Park ...it had been closed since 9/11....saw a lot of people getting rides over to Boquillas from Mexicans leading horses over to the village ..... those are some poor poor people that live in desert and probably not a paved road for 100s of miles to their village, but all it would take is one Mexican policeman or whatever they have there to show up and start harassing/arresting and you are screwed ...I can’t believe people just hop on a horse and go over there ....

The report on FNC said they were told that the judge could be bought but he refused the $5,000 offer. Maybe more is needed!

I was there in the late 1980s, same thing. Horses pulling a little boat back and forth over the Rio Grande.

Silly woman, doesn’t she know only guns can be transported over the border and only if they are for drug gangs.

Meanwhile on our side of the border, “Excuse me Mr. Illegal, would you mind if we asked you to pay part of your medical bill? Oh, okay, this offends you? I’m sorry, I won’t bring it up again. Please forgive me.

I lived in San Diego for 54 years until 6 years ago. Visited Tijuana and Ensenada (Baja California) many times over the years. Was careful to obey all laws but never felt safe. A reporter was killed on the street during one of my last visits to TJ.

In the early 1970s, I lived in San Diego and used to take weekend drives down to Ensenada. It was a fun time for Americans in those days, and a relatively safe town to visit.

About 5 years ago, my wife and I took a Holland America cruise down the West Coast of Mexico. At Puerto Vallarta, we took a ship sponsored zip line tour. It turns out we were transported about an hour’s ride inland in what could best be described as a troop transport truck. We were expecting an air conditioned bus.

On the way back, we came upon a Federale checkpoint in the middle of nowhere. These were very young army troops with automatic weapons. All of us were ordered out of the truck while it was searched for drugs and weapons. Some of the rather naive tourists thought it was funny and were taking photos. I did not as I knew full well we were at the mercy of a bunch of soldiers who could have “found” whatever they wanted to “find”. Fortunately, we were loaded back on the truck and sent on our way.

After that incident, I decided never to visit Mexico again, even on a US cruise ship shore tour. Today, just about every cruise line has abandoned all cruises down the Mexican coast. The cruise terminal in San Diego is like a ghost town. Even Panama Canal cruises do not stop until they reach Central American ports.

It’s amazing how Mexican F***ers can abuse our women in Mexico while Mexicans who illegally cross our borders are given a break when they rape American women in America.

It’s way past time for patriots to declare war against Mexicans. Marines need another verse.

We need a border fence to keep Americans out of Mexico. Build the Fence!
