Holder runs into roadblocks on off-the-record meetings on leaks

Attorney General Eric Holder's plans to sit down with media representatives to discuss guidelines for handling investigations into leaks to the news media have run into trouble.

The Associated Press issued a statement Wednesday objecting to plans for the meetings to be off the record. "If it is not on the record, AP will not attend and instead will offer our views on how the regulations should be updated in an open letter," said Erin Madigan White, the AP's media relations manager.

The New York Times is taking the same position. "It isn't appropriate for us to attend an off-the-record meeting with the attorney general," executive editor Jill Abramson said in a statement.

Like the New York Times and the Associated Press, CNN will decline the invitation for an off-the-record meeting. A CNN spokesperson says if the meeting with the attorney general is on the record, CNN would plan to participate.

The Huffington Post's Washington bureau chief, Ryan Grim, also said he will not attend unless the meeting is on the record. "A conversation specifically about the freedom of the press should be an open one…………

I think this is hilarious. If someone, anyone, leaks what Holder says, it will all be on the Politico. Even if what is leaked is total hooey, no one will believe either them or Holder.

“Attorney General Holder entered the room, naked, holding a bottle of gin in one hand and a live chicken in the other. Producing an odd looking ceremonial knife from his desk, while mumbling an odd incantation...”

My point is that now anyone can pretend to leak what Holder says. Politico has been joined by Fox News, which makes it harder, but not impossible.

In a realistic sense, a hoax leak could attribute to Holder incriminating statements against himself and Obama, or better yet, Hillary, that it was at her behest and suggestion he ordered these things.

A very good point at that. Heck, even Holder promotes hoaxes about what Holder says, so let them. Entertainment. Bread. Circuses.

BTW, it's reported on another thread Fox isn't going, but Politico is.

One way to undermine the overwhelming habit of government hiding information and suppressing reporting in the “free” press is to report or leak on “off the record” meetings and make a myth of that whole dog and pony show.

In truth, the press has no credibility to lose and will gain the chance to do some real reporting rather than just parrot talking points from the administration. The government has an obligation to inform the public and if pressured and hounded by an uncooperative press, will do so.

With the treasonous criminal Holder, the representatives of the Press better worry that they'd leave an "off-the-record" meting alive!

"That said, journalists routinely participate in off-the-record sessions, whether they prefer those conditions or not, and then continue to report on events.

Uh, isn't that what got Rosen a phone-record proctoscope in the first place? Somebody is missing the point here.

Nah. They are just a bit unsure of sitting down, off the record, with a man that just backdoored them, while at the same time trying to figure how to keep supporting a regime that just #ucked them over and not appearing like they were #ucked over. Media catch 22

Why not let Holder put a DOJ Agent in every newsroon with a black magic marker and then allow the press release.

So does this mean that since Obama wants Holder to investigate Holder on the lying and creating false charges against news reporters in order to get a liberal judge to justify a warrant for wiretap that, Holder will have an off the record meeting with Holder to determine how to not get caught doing it the next time, and then report his self reflection back to the anoited one who will proclaim there is a majory shift in how the Justice Dept pursues suspected leaks to the press.... You can’t even make this S#^T up.... Chicago thug politics that is the change that Obama promised.

This is very simple really. If the journalists meet with Eric "Hold Up the Columbia ROTC Room with a Gun" Holder in an off the record meeting on leaks, then they can subsequently be investigated for leaking information from the off the record meeting on leaks.

The journalists would be best off turning their backs to Holder every time he appears and mooning him until he resigns.

That would be better than the other alternatives they have.

I can’t figure what “off the record” actually means. Kind of seems like a veiled threat. In effect, abridging the 1A rights of the free press - in advance.

"We want to have a meeting where we inform you of the guidlelines we use to ensure a free and open press...and we want to do it in a secret, off the record meeting." Eric Holder DOJ

So the first thing we are going to do to ensure said free and open press is to meet with them in secret.
