Texas leads nation in drilling activity – by a lot

Texas continues to lead the nation in drilling activity, and by a bunch.

The state has 840 rigs drilling for oil or gas – about 47.7 percent of all U.S. rigs and 26.3 percent of all rigs worldwide, according to the latest Baker Hughes Rig Count.

Most of the Texas rigs are working in the Permian Basin (402), the Eagle Ford Shale in South Texas (232), the Granite Wash in the Panhandle (41), the Barnett Shale in North Texas (32) and the Haynesville Shale in East Texas (17).

Here’s the county-by-county breakdown of Eagle Ford rigs, as of May 24:

Atascosa County: 11

Bee County: 1

Dewitt County: 26

Dimmit County: 25

Frio County: 2

Gonzales County: 22

Karnes County: 37

La Salle County: 32

Live Oak County: 15

Maverick County: 1

McMullen County: 30

Webb County: 20

Wilson County: 4

Zavala County: 6

Yeah, but all these ugly yankees moving down here are going to water down the gene pool. Future generations may look more like Barbra Streisand or Sarah Jessica Porker.

Last I heard we have close to 80 rigs turning in Howard County if we can keep them running.
