The US Special Operations Command is looking for revolutionary new gear assisting troops in exceeding human performance in combat. The idea sounds similar to a science fiction tale, but if the command will be successful in its quest – this time it may be real. The command has posted a Request For Information (RFI) to government research centers, academy and industry, to provide information that could contribute to the evolution of the Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit, or TALOS. Defense-Update reports.

The kit will be applied as part of a futuristic uniform suit, using powered exoskeleton providing the wearer superhuman strength or ultra protection with full-body ballistic armor. Using wide-area networking, wearable computers and antennae, operators will have more situational awareness, through bionic visual and aural sensing. Other technologies that could be implemented include non-visual means of information display, including the utilization of cognitive thoughts and immersive displays depicting personalized information over the surrounding environment. health and medical monitoring features could employ embedded monitoring, oxygen supply systems, wound stasis and electromechanical compensation. Thermal and energy generation and management are also likely to be explored.

Starship Troopers had it about 50 years earlier.

I don’t think, in the near future anyway, that you can have a suit that will do everything. It’s likely that there would be custom suits for the mission.

Very good Jonty.

See the short story Q.U.R., by Anthony Boucher. In it he writes of a world with large use of robots all build the same and the machines start to go crazy.

"Almost every robot, except perhaps a few like farmhands, does only one or two things and does those things constantly. All right. Shape them so that they can best do just those things, with no parts left over. give them a brain, eyes and ears to receive commands, and whatever [sensory] organs they need to do their work...

That's the source of your whole robot epidemic. They were all burdened down with things they didn't need...

"But this can't be done overnight. People are used to android robots... They'll be scared of your unhuman-looking contraptions... Give'em a name. A good name... Keep 'robots' thats common domain... I've got it. Usuform. Quinby's Usuform Robots. Q.U.R."

I read this when I was 14...still waiting for exoskeltons and flying cars. PopSci promised exoskeletons any day now.

How about a veggie picking suit?

And then in off-hours it does border-patrol and shows up at welfare offices for charging and re-load.

What’s the point? Any opponents of the A Team can never hit them anyway.

Has the UN declared the development and use of such suits to be a war crime yet? If we get there first, they will. We can count on it. If Russia, China, N. Korea, Iran, etc., get there first... crickets.

High explosives (IEDs) will render the suit and its wearer null and void.

Don’t need this. What they need is some sort of way to weave dragon scales or other bullet proof material into the uniform.

The day soldiers can survive IED’s and still function on the battlefield without loss of motion is the day we can go into $hith*le$ like Afganistan and work with impunity
