Note this is the WAPO aka Pravda publishes the actual perspective of the Regime and it’s best to never forget that this is true of all the ‘Open Border’ traitorous US media including Fox, WSJ, NYPost, and all other Rupert Murdoch publications.

You forget about Saudi Arabia because they do not want a powerful Iran and Iran also dislikes them.

Israel is in any case surrounded by Sunni states. Better to foment discord between Sunnis and shias so they can notunite against Israel. Saudi will no tolerate another avowedly Shia rather than baathists state on their border. They got rid of saddam who was a threat to them and the wahabbis, thanksyo George Bush senior and they also got rid of khaddafi thanks to thewest.

If Assad wins he will surely give the Hizbollah a free hand peering down from the Golan heights into Israel.

Israel controls the Golan Heights so the Hizzies cannot do what you have said.

Thanks Brad from Tennessee.
...includes increased numbers of Iranian-made surveillance drones and, in some areas, anti-mortar systems similar to those used by U.S. forces to trace the source of mortar fire... new tactics that some experts also attribute to foreign advisers and training. "We’re seeing a turning point in the past couple of months, and it has a lot to do with the quality and type of weapons and other systems coming from Iran and Russia," ...cementing an advantage gained by Syrian forces with the arrival of hundreds of Hezbollah fighters from Lebanon in recent weeks...

The Golan Heights is controlled by Israel but the strategic Hermon mountain ridge is controlled by Israel (on the south west) and by the Syrian army on the north-east ridge. In other words, the mountain is controlled by both sides.

If you look at the map, you will see that south Lebanon juts downward, south into Israel proper so technically a Hizbollah run south Lebanon and Hizbollah controlled Syrian Golan poses a serious threat to Israel’s north. Look at the tiny Israeli upper Galilee village of Metulla, it is a “finger” isthmus pointing into southern Lebanon and is inside of Lebanon on 3 sides. It is not too far from the Golan.

Assad has reliable allies. That's not to suggest we should be supporting the terrorists opposing him, but I wonder who considers us a reliable ally.

No, I do not want to go to war with Syria but this is a”proxy” war being fought by many sides, primarily it is the Axis of Evil supporting another evil nation, Syria.
This civil war is really about Iranian hegemony in the Middle East. Syria is perhaps winning due to Soviet, oops, I mean Russian support coupled with Iran, Lebanon's Hizbollah, North Korea and various Jihadist groups and militias. It is in the US’s interest to weaken Iran's grip and involvement in Syria. How to do that? Support Al-Qaeida? No but America is losing allies left, right and center in that region. The ONLY reliable, Democratic, Pro-Western, STABLE country in the region is Israel and her back is up against the wall re Iran and Syria.

If Assad wins, the Soviet, oops, I mean Russian Navy will retain her bases on the Med. That is bad news for the West.
If Obama had any sense of defending US interests who would have done many things and not done other things which I cannot go into here.
