Several years ago, I was visiting Fort Pickens State Park near Pensacola. In addition to the old fort there are several batteries constructed in the Spanish American War era.
I noticed one of them had a newly installed disappearing cannon. I guess I should say newly reinstalled as that is the gun originally there.
It was an interesting cannon which was only raised to where it would be vulnerable to fire right before it was fired. Recoil would then drive it back down where it was hidden. BTW it was a very large cannon.
I recall the name Watervliet Arsenal on it. I had no idea what that was at the time.

Yes I could spend all day going through the fort and all those batteries. I think some of them were used in WWII tho I doubt Pensacola was ever threatened by anyone’s Navy.
Well now that I think about it, German Subs did patrol that area very heavily.

I have been in lots of those old bunkers, from Fla to Hi to Ponape.
Cool to explore.
Ones is Hi are are still used.
