As an example, just yesterday I subbed for a high school Language Arts teacher where it was my responsibility to listen to speeches performed by the students.

One on the students lamented the existence of a library in the school because it was absolutely useless - a call of "who reads anyway", was met with hoots and howls of agreement - and the library would be better used as a hallway.

The answer to your question is somewhat nebulous because most American schools have a large Mexican component that must be accommodated.

There was another article last year lamenting the fact that there aren’t many book stores left in Mexico as they can’t remain profitable. Another region of the world where many aren’t literate and where very few books outside of government propaganda are turned out of a printing press is surprise - the Middle East. Also extremely depressing stats.

I’ve also overheard more than one young person - of numerous diverse backgrounds state with pride that they don’t care about history or anything from the past - it’s all irrelevant nonsense to them; and the other line is “who reads nowadays!” as if it’s only ignorant people with too much time on their hands. I’ve also had a number of liberal people tell me I can’t think for myself as all I can do is parrot other people’s ideas I read. These people often have never read a book and of course their ideas are all original and they are brilliant.
