Feds Reject Michigan Attempt to Ban Use of Indian Mascots by Schools

In February, the Michigan Department of Civil Rights cited 35 Michigan school districts for discrimination, saying their American Indian mascots reinforce stereotypes and hurt Native American students' self-esteem and learning.

But the U.S. Education Department's Office of Civil Rights has denied the state's complaint, according to the Associated Press. Federal officials say Michigan officials provided no specific examples of racial incidents or American Indian students suffering specific harm because of the reported discrimination.

The state civil rights department said June 3 that it's disappointed by the ruling and is considering its options.

Michigan's Republican lawmakers are pleased with the decision, after criticizing the civil rights department for taking the complaint to the federal government. The state GOP felt the effort was misguided and done without input from communities.

Wouldn’t we have to change the names of a whole bunch of Michigan towns and cities.

After all, one explanation of the name “Saginaw” is where the Sauk were (Before they were exterminated by the Ojibwa indians)

Liberals would have a field day renaming everyplace after various homosexuals, marxists, and labor leaders. I’m betting that there would be hundreds of towns named Obama.

There’s an entire school district in Macomb County named Chippewa Valley Schools and within that district are Chippewa Valley and Dakota High Schools. Also, an Algonquin Jr. High School.

The Nimrod Nation (primarily made up of Native Americans) is not affected by this nonsense. If it ever becomes un-PC to be a Mighty Hunter, WAR!

Wouldn’t it be much better if it were Obama county, Pelosi Valley schools, Trumpka High, and Conyers Jr High?

Indian casinos use their native American heritage. Why don't the Feds go after them? Easy - money.

Where does the US Constitution authorize the Feds going after mascots? Isn't that part of freedom of speech?

And wouldn’t the removal of Indian mascots be counted as a way to erase the memory of Indians in America. You know, like the Muslims erase any prior civilization to lands they conquer?

Oops, ignore my prior 2 posts, I read what I expected to see. The Feds were actually shutting down a State of Michigan effort to elimination Indian mascots.

American Indian mascots reinforce stereotypes and hurt Native American students' self-esteem and learning.

If that's the case, shouldn't the University of Notre Dame change its mascot because it hurts Irish-Americans' self-esteem and learning?

The state GOP felt the effort was misguided and done without input from communities.

That's strange, because according to the story, the effort to get rid of Indian mascots was by the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, which appears to be an executive department agency within a Republican state administration.

But the U.S. Education Department's Office of Civil Rights has denied the state's complaint, according to the Associated Press. Federal officials say Michigan officials provided no specific examples of racial incidents or American Indian students suffering specific harm because of the reported discrimination.

Talk about oversized federal government. It's totally absurd when the feds presumably have the power to determine what the mascots of the local schools in Michigan are going to be!

BTW, how many students in Michigan schools consider themselves American Indians, anyway?

Maybe you would have to ask the American Indians in Michigan what they think about these names? But they are so few that they may be hard to find.
