OTTAWA - Ottawa Humane Society staff euthanized a 25-pound cat which was so overweight it couldn’t even stand up — and the owner has been charged.
Guylene Roy was investigated and charged with neglect after the 12-year-old feline, named Napoleon, was brought in to the shelter to be surrendered.
OHS executive director Bruce Roney calls it “an extreme case” and says the animal suffered from fur matted with fecal matter and severe skin irritation causing painful scalding of the anus and hind limbs.
He said investigation revealed Roy had taken the cat to a veterinarian several times but is alleged to have ignored the veterinarian’s instructions which led to the further deterioration of the cat’s health.
Roney said there is no singular rule for feeding cats — it depends on their age and how active they are.
“You need to take a vet’s advice,” he said. “And that’s what appears did not happen here.”
The OHS conducts 1,000 investigations each year but only lays 12 to 24 charges for neglect or abuse.
“We hold charges for only the most serious cases,” he said.
While Roney admits cases of overweight animals is becoming more common, he’s not seen one this extreme before.
This cat was in very bad condition, “ said OHS inspector Miriam Smith.
“Failure to follow a veterinarian’s advice and allowing a pet to deteriorate like this is appalling. And it’s against the law.”
Roy is scheduled to appear in court June 27.

Mine is a meateater! The little guys loves raw meats, cooked meats, hell, I bet roadkill would entice him. He hates veggies.
And mine loves pulling open the bread drawer to get the bread. Especially likes the gluten-free. The more expensive, the more he likes it.
My maine coon is 23 lbs, but that isn’t out of the ordinary for that breed.
Poor kitty. He didn’t have much of a quality of life, thanks to his anal orifice owner. Guy SHOULD be prosecuted.

The neighbors used to have a huge cat. It wasn’t the owners’ fault. The cat loved to fish in the river. He’d happily chow down on fish he caught.
3 guesses where I came up with my screenname. My Rusty does not like it when I am on the computer and not scratching his chin or some other top priority, so he glares at me and occasionally jumps in and hits the keyboard.
A cat that size could give a dog a lot of trouble...
He’s pretty laid back, as long as a dog or another cat leaves him alone, he just lays there and looks at them. He’s very friendly towards adult people but doesn’t like small children messing with him.
LOL, your MC is a Rusty too. I named mine after a farting horse on Seinfeld. Rusty was a stray kitten I took in and for the first month I had him he farted the worst smelling farts I have ever had the misfortune to encounter. They were deadly. After eating good food for a while the farting stopped.
I remember that episode. I love Seinfeld.
Wow, my Maine Coon is 25 pounds, but there’s no fat on him. He’s just a big cat (about 4 feet long from nose to tail). He does get the matted fur from time to time. he loves to lay in the garden and always seems to get the occasional slug matted into his hair. I took the vet’s advice on it though, and we bought a $12 cordless beard trimmer that is perfect for getting out the snarls and matS.
It’s too bad they put the cat down. A good cleaning, removal of the mats along with a little less food would have been the solution.

This WAS animal abuse and he should be prosecuted. He probably fed the cat too much dry food, which is carb-heavy, along with human treats. Cats need pure protein; carbs make them fat and sick.
