A Brazilian told me that a Brazilian was actually responsible for the first powered flight. The Wright brothers had the best documentation. If it isn’t documented, it didn’t happen.

Also, did people build off of the "discovery"/"invention" or did progress die there?

Some technologies, such as television had been in the works since the 1890s (with intentions dating back even further).

Correct. Anyone who knows anything about aviation history knows that the first POWERED flight was by Alberto Santos Dumont who, along with his close friend Mr. Cartier, you can also thank for the wristwatch.

Correct. Just like lawyer friends always tells me, it’s not the truth that counts, it’s what evidence and how many witnesses you can stroll into the court room. It’s a frikkin’ drawing for crying out loud.

The Wright Brothers had the documentation and they made the airplane commercially viable.Columbus was probably preceded by any number of “discoverers” but he sold America- made it commercially viable. That is what matters
