OAK RIDGE — A woman with suspected mental issues was able to drive into the main entrance and all the way through the high-security Y-12 National Security Complex unhindered Thursday morning, according to an Oak Ridge Police Department report obtained by the News Sentinel.

The security breach occurred less than a year after three protesters cut through a series of security fences and walked to the innermost sanctum of Y-12, the country’s largest repository of weapons-grade uranium.

Note to security guys. Occasionally you need to look up from the solitaire game on your laptop and see what's going on around you.

I’ve guarded an Air Guard base, including visits by then Vice President Bush and all kinds of dignitaries and a large ammo dump. We had peacecreep protestors, infiltrators, teenagers on a lark and Eastern bloc spies. It’s not as easy as it looks on the Andy Griffith show. Having said that, what is going on here?

I certainly agree it's not as simple (or easy) as ole Asa guarding the Mayberry Bank.

In a follow up in the newspaper, the motorist is said to have stated that the "Nice officers" waved her in.

The story makes it seem her mental problems aided in her getting through the gate when it was the mental problems of the security guards.

“..the motorist is said to have stated that the “Nice officers” waved her in.”

Security was probably waving their arms and yelling, “STOP!!”
