(2) European white folks were originally dark skinned folks with a variety of eye colors and mostly dark har ~ until about the time they moved far enough North to need light skin. At the moment that's up in the air. The oldest anyone will go is 75,000 BC but that was when they lived in Central Asia ~ before they got to Europe. There's a strong suggestion it had to happen long after they split from the Chinese, which would be anywhere from 35,000 to 50,000 BC, because
(3) The Chinese have an entirely different way of suppressing melanin AND, on top of that, their gene for controlling hair thickness, texture, sweat glands, breast size and a couple of other things is really different from the same gene in the rest of humanity!
The issue with Europe is that settlement was in fits and starts, and retreats because it took place DURING the last ice age ~ which lasted 100,000 years! So people were moving in and out of the area as the climate changed from nasty and cold to fairly moderate interstadials of various durations.
Over in the East the Chinese didn't make any really serious inroads into what we today call China until about the end of the Younger Dryas, or about 10,000 to 11,000 years ago. I suspect that had to do with the major dominant species roaming the grasslands of the Chinese plains ~ TIGERS of all kinds ~ with huge fangs, enormous bodies, and ferocious demeanor. By the end of the Younger Dryas the game animals those tigers lived on were gone, as were the tigers ~ today's specimens are something people could handle with new stone age technology!

There is a possibility white folks didn't lighten up until as recently as about 5,000 years ago ~ but I haven't heard much on that for a couple of years ~ mostly since they figured out even the Neanderthals had to be light skinned to survive Europe, so why not everybody else!
