Large explosions are being heard coming from the military side of Kabul international airport, which houses a NATO headquarters.

The explosions began at about 4:30am on Monday from the direction of the military headquarters.

The attackers took over a building which security forces then attempted to storm, police in Kabul said.

“An explosion ... occurred after which a group of suicide attackers entered a building in Qasaba road, west of Kabul airport, and started sporadic shooting,” Hashmat Stanikzai, Kabul’s police chief, said in a statement.

“Now the area is sealed off by the security forces and a stand-off between security forces and the attackers is ongoing.”

The US-led NATO coalition’s Joint Command headquarters at the airport runs the day-to-day operations of the nearly 12-year-old war against the Taliban-led insurgency in Afghanistan.

The airport’s military side is also used for NATO transport and other aircraft.

The cause of the explosions was not immediately clear, but fighters in Afghanistan usually carry out attacks in the early morning.
