I lived in Oak Ridge for several years. It is a government town with jobs dominated by federal employers. As such, it is a liberal cesspool in otherwise conservative East Tennessee.

Yep and KNS has been a Liberal Agenda Newpaper ever since Frank Cagle left as editor. If it's Liberal Agenda KNS/knoxnews.com will back it. Last year they ran several days of news about an area gay high schooler getting a school yearbook story on his lifestyle. This was done without other parents knowledge. The parents who shelled out big bucks for the book and it became agenda driven. I would have demanded a full refund myself.

The city of Oak Ridge is indeed majority Liberal but Anderson County is for the most part Conservative.

Not an uncommon male name in the south. I knew a medical examiner in Knoxville name Ira, a farmer named Gale, and a guy in high school named Dawn. All were male none are gay. The ones who were gay? The names of ones in school who were gay? Steve, Wayne, Russ, Dennis, & Doug.

"Don't Say Gay" is a conservative movement (often referenced in Tennessee due to a bill introduced there) that attempts to stop the teaching of "gay history" and "gay sex" to children in public schools. It's not a movement by homosexual people themselves. Hence, if I understand your confusion correctly, homosexuals do call themselves "gay" but "Don't Say Gay" is directed against homosexuals and the teaching of homosexuality. Homosexual people do not have anything to do with the campaign. Google it.

Around here (the Midwest), there were commercials about not saying that something was gay because it was hurtful to gays. It was sort of an anti-bullying campaign against gays. It was started by the gay community to gain acceptance. So make sure you don’t say that people are gay, but by all means, make sure you take notice of gay people, and not only tolerate them, but accept them and all of their ideals as normal. Just don’t “say” gay.

That’s just fine with me. Let’s call gays what they really are. Homosexuals. “Gay” used to mean happy when I was a kid. I love how words’ meanings are all being changed (sarcasm). And not just words, but symbols, too. Rainbows used to be a sign from God of hope in the world. Now it means you’re homosexual. Great (again...sarcasm).

Deception and subterfuge is to be expected, but this tactic is so far off the audacity meter that there aren’t even words to decribe the depravity of the minds behind it.

I agree. Children will hear "gay," as in "first openly gay hispanic Federal judge," and accept that "gay" identifies a quality on the order of "hispanic" or "tall" or "left-handed." Nobody is telling them about the specific behaviors, or even the urges, that define adult homosexualitgy.

Well then, let’s just say I am confused as to why, when you joined a website, you decided to find an article from a few days earlier to comment on, instead of something current.

I am a cautious person about new things, people, etc. until something or someone shows me otherwise.

There are a lot of pretenders out there, so I just take what people say with a grain of salt until I know more. Don’t take my skepticism personally. A lot of FReepers are skeptical, some even more than I am.
