My Dad served in the Army in WW II. He wasn’t Jewish, but he brought home a copy of a pocket-sized book entitled “Readings from the Holy Scriptures for Jewish Soldiers and Sailors”.
The title page reads as follows:
THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
March 6, 1941
To the Members of the Army:
As Commander-in-Chief I take pleasure in commending the reading of the Bible to all who serve in the armed forces of the United States. Throughout the centuries men of many faiths and diverse origins have found in the Sacred Book words of wisdom, counsel and inspiration. It is a fountain of strength and now, as always, an aid in attaining the highest aspirations of the human soul.
Very sincerely yours,
Franklin D. Roosevelt
My Dad was also in the Army and one of my brothers has kept that same book Dad kept with him in CBI Theater of War.
