Freedom of Association and the Boy Scouts of America

Ethics and Public Policy Center president Ed Whelan observed that those two BSA proposals shared on basic feature: "While purporting to allow (in the case of the first) or require (in the case of the second) troops to bar openly gay adult leaders, they threaten to fatally undercut the legal basis for maintaining that bar."

Consider for a moment the irrationality of the new policy: a 17-year-old lifelong scout who is avowedly gay and also a youth leader, would, on his 18th birthday, be required to cease and desist being a Scout leader. Whether enforced or not, the situation would instantly invite an avalanche of lawsuits. It is a de facto path for allowing openly gay Scout leaders across the board.

Whelan didn't mince words, noting that the elite leaders of the BSA were "trying to snooker and bamboozle local Scout leaders and parents to embrace a proposal that isn't sustainable and that will lead in short order to a wholesale abandonment of the existing policy against openly gay adult leaders. Whether or not one supports that abandonment, the dissembling way that the BSA's top leaders are pursuing it is a shameful violation of their duty to be trustworthy."

In the end, no matter what your view on gay Scouts or Scout leaders, if you cherish your right to freedom of association, you should mourn the organizational suicide (or was it an inside hit job?) committed by the BSA last month. Appeasement of push polls and empty slogans of "inclusiveness" only erodes your freedom.

The Boy Scouts of America provided just over a century of priceless service to the United States. It’s too bad that BSA could not survive the death of America as a free country.

I’m guessing the freeper posters who call people who disagree with the BSA’s “compromise” cowards haven’t thought this part all the way through.

Most Freepers seem to have thought it through much better than the average American Idol viewer. The BSA has created a place where a 12 year old boy can be sent out in the woods with a 17 year old gay almost-man, with none of the “two person” rules required for adult contact with children. Most people are aware that 13 year olds are having sex, but they believe that a 17 year old gay teen is pure of heart and would never do anything wrong. Freepers seem to know better.

On the day the new membership policy passed, the first radio report I heard at first described the policy, then immediately interviewed someone who decried how unfair it was that a gay scout could participate until age 18, then be forced out and not be allowed to be an adult leader.

This was all either a ruse designed to bring about a court ruling that the new policy is unconstitutional, or the so-called national leaders are some of the most clueless dumbasses anywhere to be found, unfit to 'lead' any organization.

Are they going to remove the words “God” and “morally straight” from the scout oath? Or will they force new scouts to bear false witness?

There is a slight tint of the "ruse" there, too, IMO.

Consider for a moment the irrationality of the new policy: a 17-year-old lifelong scout who is avowedly gay homosexual and also a youth leader, would, on his 18th birthday, be required to cease and desist being a Scout leader.

But if the same lifelong scout loses the "avowedly" part and keeps his perversion to himself, and does not misbehave, he may remain a leader.

HOMOSEXUAL, because there's nothing GAY about it.

This whole thing has not been about allowing homosexual Scouts. It is about destroying anything that does not celebrate homosexuality.
Scouting (if it continues to exist) will now have to have some training of the Scouts on how to behave and accommodate homosexual Scouts. This alone sexualizes a youth program that does not need it.

Our Troop will not re-charter in the fall. The commitment to the male youth is still there. I just will not be through Scouting.

Very, very true. Glad the charter is being abandonned.
