Southern Baptists consider resolution on scouting

HOUSTON (AP) - Southern Baptist Convention leaders have proposed a resolution expressing their opposition to the Boy Scouts of America's new policy allowing gay Scouts.

The resolution also calls on the Boy Scouts to remove from executive and board leadership the individuals who earlier sought to allow gays as both members and leaders without consulting the many religious groups that sponsor Scout troops.

While the resolution does not recommend that Southern Baptists drop ties with the Scouts, it expresses support for those churches and families that decide to do so.

It also encourages churches and families who choose to remain with the Scouts to work toward the reversal of the new membership policy.

Delegates to the annual meeting of the nation's largest Protestant denomination will vote on the resolution on Wednesday in Houston.

“Sounds like they are caving like the Mormons.”

Definitely a different story than last week.

Hey...they’re evolving.

You are either with G-d, or you are against Him. No gray area.

Choose wisely.

How are they caving? According to this account, they state their opposition.

I don’t care if you are Mormon or Southern Baptist just as long as you don’t cave against this evil. As far as I am concerned the Mormon church needs to grow some! If the Southern Baptists still want their reputation as conservatives they better not lose theirs!

“and be it further RESOLVED, That we call on the Boy Scouts to remove from executive and board leadership those individuals who, earlier this year, sought to change both the membership and leadership policy of the Scouts without seeking input from the full range of the Scouting family;

and be it further RESOLVED, That we affirm the right of all families and churches prayerfully to assess their continued relationship with the BSA, expressing our support for those churches and families that as a matter of conscience can no longer be part of the Scouting family;

and be it further RESOLVED, That we encourage churches and families that choose to remain in relationship with the Boy Scouts to work toward the reversal of this new membership policy and to advocate against any future change in leadership and membership policy that normalizes sexual conduct opposed to the biblical standard;

and be it further RESOLVED, That we encourage churches that choose to sever ties with the Boy Scouts not to abandon their ministry to boys but consider expanding their Royal Ambassadors ministry, a distinctively Southern Baptist missions organization to develop godly young men;”

Doesn’t sound much like a cave to me. Remember, the SBC cannot tell any member church what to do. Each congregation is independent.

Southern Baptist churches are autonomous. The Convention can only recommend.

The Southern Baptist Convention is not a top-down, centralist organization that operates in the same way that an Archdiocese does, where the Bishop can order a local congregation to fall in line. Southern Baptist congregations take guidance, but not orders from a larger voluntary association (the "Convention" in the title) of self-identifying SBC churches.

Have self-identifying Catholics ever voted predictably and monolithically as a single voting block, which as much consistency as SBC or LDS members have?

Just so. I think this is about as strong a position as a convention can take. They cannot force their member churches to act, but they can recommend. And they can once again point out the Christian position on homosexuality.

Any “new” scouts have to have decentralized control, or they will be targeted just as the Boy Scouts were.

“Remember, the SBC cannot tell any member church what to do.”

That is the problem, they should be able to tell them. Tell them to not let the devil ie the Boi Scouts in!! In our church if a Bishop says it is not going to happen in our parishes then you better believe it will not happen.

In the long run it would save a lot of people a lot of trouble.

mormons are pushing to legalize polygamy (yes it is happening)
homosexual ‘marriage’ legalization = equals a challenge to the prohibition of polygamy
They must accept homosexuals into their troops as part of the greater goal.

The policy cannot be reversed, at least not with the current scouting organization.

A bell cannot be unrung.

The Boy Scouts have now become a pro-gay organization.

If the Southern Baptist Convention endorses individuals and Churches that remain part of the BSA, then the Southern Baptists are endorsing homosexual behavior.

I recommend that the Baptists merge with the Episcopal Church.

How are they caving? According to this account, they state their opposition.

Their newest statement is decidedly softer than a couple of weeks ago, when they were advising that all churches which sponsor a BSA unit drop sponsorship. Now, they're apparently trying to salvage the situation.
