That isn’t going to happen unless we repeal direct election of senators, which probably just isn’t going to happen.

I appreciate your point and would support a repeal of 17A. However, note that senators take an oath to protect and defend the Constitution, including respecting Congress's Article I, Section 8-limited powers, no matter who elects them.
