CHINA -- A Chinese woman almost lost her life savings recently when termites invaded a wooden drawer in which she kept a plastic bag containing 400,000 yuan: the equivalent of $65,000 U.S. dollars. It was only after the woman decided to redecorate her house in Guandong Province that she noticed the termites had dined on her nest egg. According to the Guangzhou Daily, the money was given to the woman by her children.

A local bank generously scanned the remaining cash and was able to identity 340,000 yuan which means the termite's meal ultimately cost the woman roughly $9,786.

My mother could have lost savings bonds the same way. Luckily, the termites only attacked books.

Wouldn’t the government treasury replace the bills if they receive proof of the ripped up notes? In America I would think they would.

Guandong Province that she noticed the termites had dined on her nest egg.

"Say it! Say it! Say "I lost the nest-egg." Go on, say it!"

Looks like these termites and Bungling Ben’s QE circus have a lot in common.

This is China, so they’ll probably send her to a labor camp for destruction of state property.

This is NOT America. However, they replaced part of it. Perhaps the termiets totally consumed $9000 worth.

I will say that the Chinese government is very careful with its money. Tourists are nt allowed to take it out of the country. I was on a cruise there in 1983, and upon returning to the ship in Shanghai I had to turn in all my Chinese money. I had tried to spend it all, but I had a few coins left. The Bank of China took it and refunded me a US dime!

19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. According to reports, after relieving the woman of so much money, the termites painted the Chinese town red, asking again and again from place to place: is the bar tender here?

Wouldn’t the government treasury replace the bills if they receive proof of the ripped up notes?..In 1977, as a cop, we had a house fire. My partner and I went inside to save three people. The dude kept saying “ I need my ammo box! I need my ammo box!” I cold-cocked him to stay out of the house. Doug and I damn fried getting them out. After the fire, we went back to find the guy crying in the middle of the charred, burnt ashes with his ammo box. “I’ve lost my life savings, Dad’s life savings and my wife’s life savings you SOB’. Inside the box was a huge pile of ashes. The guy living next to my house was a Treasury agent and I took the ammo box to him. He took it to Washington, DC. where they weighed it or did something to the ashes and the victim received $200,000 in the mail sometime down the road.

They aren’t quite as careful today. I took a fair amount of RMB from Shenzhen into Hong Kong last summer, but ended up spending most of it in HK, anyway. A few leftovers made it back to the USA with me. :)
