I guess he’s always been a sleazy politician at heart and realized that Conservatism was the preferred vehicle to move forward.

Even so, why after moving forward does he abandon the ones who brought him so far? Why not stay on that train?

After the recent border votes in the Senate, I’ve firmed up my “sleazy politician” opinion (which may well be the answer to your questions)and I’ll amend my other comment to “Conservatism was the most convenient vehicle to carjack.”
