Ha! Sounds like it was written in the same vein as Larry Niven’s “Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex”

If I had those ‘god-like’ powers then when I’m at a restaurant and the waiter comes up and talks to me right as I get a bite into my mouth....ZOT!!!!

Sort of offside, but I think I now object to “just war” theory and take it a step further. If it saves our troops, I think it justifies something beyond normal just action in war. Hence the dropping of the A-bomb on Japan. Under pure “just war” theory, dropping the A-bomb was an evil action. So was the bombing of Dresden. I personally have no problem with either. My attitude is “if you start the war, it sucks to be you”

‘Captain Marvel’ was an awesome serial...’Spider’ pulps made ‘Man of Steel’ pale by comparison when it came to destruction. Used to wonder who the hell rebuilt New York so fast between all those monthly issues. The carnage was unbelievable.

I have the first season with George Reeves and yeah it’s pretty violent; lot of shooting and nasty threats. I was especially jolted when a hood calmly hauls off and punches Lois Lane in the face. Kids show indeed!

Totally agree. KC is one of the best graphic novels I’ve ever read. I’m quoting imperfectly, but it’s been said if you were given superpowers, Marvel is the kind of hero you’d be but DC is the kind of hero you’d aspire to be.

I agree there’s a place for this kind of “debate Superman killing Zod” and you do a good job. And as you suggest at the end, all the writers had to do was make the phantom zone projector available and the legend as we know it would live on. Superman has faced *much* worse situations than the one presented in this movie and kept his obligation to respect all life.

But this is exactly my point - all the interesting what-if’ing aside: Goyer and Nolan don’t like that legend. They like their Superman to be a killer if he needs to be. Why? What purpose does it serve? Other than to reflect the nihilistic “amoral when we ‘have’ to be” society we’re becoming.

I said it before in this thread, the small and silver screens positively hemorrhage characters that fit that bill. Superman is Superman because he can always make the right choice and maintain his aforementioned obligation. leave me my Superman. Must we corrupt even him? Who’s agenda does that serve, anyway?

“Exactly. When you have your foot on your enemy’s throat, you crush him. Period. I never could abide all the mercy shown to the villain when the good guy wins.”

When *you* have your foot on your enemy’s throat. You want Black Adam, have your Black Adam. I’ll keep my Superman.

I read the perfect comment someone made. What kind of Superman movie was this where the world was better off without Superman. This movie was an anti-Superman movie. This is our culture as it stands. You shouldn’t like it.

Well put - but the concept of Superman is an ideal. Ideals don’t change even as the times change around them. Others might become more brutal (or “sophisticated” as some like to say), but Superman doesn’t.

p.s. That story line really bothered me too.
p.p.s. Plus, to make it worse he didn’t even stay dead! Poisoning the legend of Wonder Woman for no (apparent) reason.

Agreed. Oops. I left off a part: at least the use of the A bomb can be justified under the theory of just war because in the end it saved far more lives (ours, theirs, soldiers, civilian, everyone) than it cost.

The purpose it served was to avoid "convenient" writing. The phantom zone projector being available would have been like the St. Patrick's Day Parade just happening to be passing by at the right time in the movie "The Fugitive" .Too easy. Too BS. If you are going to set up a senerio, you have to follow it through to not only it's most logical, but also it's most likely or realistic conclusion. Too many lazy writers bring chance in to resolve their stories.

My phantom zone projector remark was a throw away comment regarding the writer’s intent. Are you telling me the only possible “realistic” outcome was for Superman to kill and that is the reason the writers wrote it to be so? Because they were such good writers?

If so, I disagree. They could care less what plot devices they had to ultimately use - they knew before pen hit paper that Superman was going to kill in this movie. That was a central tenant of this movie (even Snyder admits this). That even the precious Big Blue Boy-scout has to kill once in a while in the “real” world. Like I said, Goyer and Nolan had an agenda and it had nothing to do with the inspiring legend of the Superman mythology.

My guess is if we actually survive this nihilistic, self absorbed, unrestrained phase our culture is going through - *if* - Superman will go back to his “unrealistic” Dudley-do-right ways. Those who are disgusted by that kind of behaviour will always have Lobo and Black Adam to enjoy in the DC universe.

I’ve read about six or seven of the old 1930s “Spider” pulps. Jaw-droppingly brutal stuff. Written in an almost ‘hysteria’ manner, like wild fever-dreams. You get the sense that the author and his character have an intense moral code in dispatching evil, that almost borderlines insanity. All with the backdrop of apocalyptic carnage, courtesy criminal madmen. Wild and fascinating.

They wrote Superman exactly how he is supposed to be, a protector.

Not a killer. He killed no one but Zod, and it caused him considerable pain to do so.

“They wrote Superman exactly how he is supposed to be, a protector.”

No... I’m pretty sure he and Zod razed Metropolis to the ground. And I’m pretty sure all those sky scrapers were occupied.

“Not a killer. He killed no one but Zod, and it caused him considerable pain to do so.”

He’s a killer (in Goyer and Nolan’s world) by definition. My Superman doesn’t kill. Not even a mass murderer. And even if the law demands capital punishment, he is not the law. You’re confusing Superman with Judge Dredd.

“I haven’t seen the latest Superman or maybe a few others.

Does Zod ever actually say, “Kneel Before Zod”?”

He does not. Too corny ;-)

LOL? Superman doesn’t kill?! Superman HAS always killed, but always tried not to. Only in extreme circumstances.
