Protesters jailed as they decry Republican shift in North Carolina

A conservative shift by North Carolina's first Republican-led government in more than a century is drawing weekly protests to the state capital of Raleigh, but some lawmakers are defiantly standing their ground.

In the latest of the "Moral Monday" demonstrations, dozens of clergy members, doctors, teachers and environmentalists trampled paper copies of legislation before being handcuffed by police officers when they refused to leave the statehouse as an act of civil disobedience.

Some lawmakers have been defiant, and at times heated, in their responses to the protests. One state senator referred to the events as "Moron Monday" in a newspaper opinion column.

"The circus came to the State Capitol this week, complete with clowns, a carnival barker and a sideshow," state Senator Thom Goolsby wrote in the Chatham Journal.

McCrory decried the influence of "outsiders" on the group, comparing protesters to the much larger crowds that tried unsuccessfully to oust Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker in response to a 2011 law that severely limited public workers' collective bargaining rights in that state.

Oh, how thick the irony gets.

Funny — I must have missed the Reuters headline “Protesters Targeted by IRS as They Decry Democrat Shift in U.S.”

Or:

“Journalists Targeted by Justice Department as They Decry Democrat Shift In U.S.”

Subtle, Reuters. No one will ever catch on to your subtle spin.

And that's just the beginning of what those stinking vermin ought to get. North Carolina has gone far too liberal in the past few decades. And these scum need to learn a hard lesson.

In my opinion... the cop needs his butt kicked. If the protesters are violating the law... then arrest them, cuff them, and take them to jail. But walking down and spraying them .... just because he can.... he needs his butt kicked.

They were told to leave and were warned. What they got is what they wanted.

I see your point and can understand it. I still respectfully disagree when it comes to these leftist creeps. I'm beyond 70 and well recall the rise of the smelly hippies (like Bill Ayers) in the 1960s. That whole "movement" could have been stopped with a no-nonsense approach and overwhelming force. From my viewpoint, liberals are the enemy and pose an existential threat to America. There's only one way to deal with the enemy.

Nope... what they deserve is to be arrested, cuffed, and hauled off to jail. The cop should be hauled off with them.

Ah- that photo is not from today, in Raleigh. It was hit and muggy here- why would people be wearing winter coats? Hello..

Problem is liberals have the same right to protest that you and I have. If they are breaking the law... then haul them off. But some cop walking down the line and spraying people who are not endangering him in anyway.... just because he can... that’s just wrong. Someday when they take away our rights to pray, or to go to church, or to speak freely...... I may be one of those sitting and protesting.

Yes, the pepper spray (rightly, IMHO) was directed at the OWS scum in California. It was not from North Carolina but I posted it to indicate what I thought ought be done to these vile characters. I long for the clear-thinking days of Senator Jesse Helms when right was right and wrong was wrong.

Were the "doctors" wearing those white doctor smocks they used to wear with a rectal thermometer in the pocket?

Thanks for the response and I do understand your viewpoint. I see things quite differently since, by definition, being a liberal is equivalent to treason. Consequently, their protesting is an act of sedition.

It's a very black and white world to me with little, if any, nuance. Liberals are evil and simply can't be tolerated. Take a look at the About page of FReeper max americana to get an idea of where I stand since his thoughts echo my own.

All in my humble opinion as an old guy who fondly remembers a far better America in the 1950s.

My favorite Senator. We really don’t have anybody who has stepped up and filled his shoes.

God Bless the memory of Senator Helms, a good Christian man of unwavering principle. I see a lot of Helms' traits in our brave Texan, Senator Ted Cruz. We just need 99 more like him!

In summary, liberals hate America and they hate conservatives/Pubbies/patriots.

Well, their hatred does not compare to my hatred. My hatred is 10,000 times worse than theirs. That’s why I pray for the Civil War to erupt. The left want it to happen, too anyways, right? Let’s get this over with and whomever is left standing takes America.
