Fort Huachuca Black Officers' club on most endangered list

Houston's Astrodome stadium, New York's old Pan Am Worldport Terminal at Kennedy Airport and the Mountain View Black Officers' club in Fort Huachuca are joining a list of the nation's most endangered historic places.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation is releasing its listing today of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. It includes sites from Maine to Alaska.

The Astrodome was the world's first domed, air-conditioned stadium and was once called the "eighth wonder of the world." Now it needs a plan for reuse to avoid demolition. At New York's JFK Airport, the flying-saucer-shaped Worldport Terminal helped usher in the jet age in 1960 but has been vacated by Delta Air Lines and faces demolition.

This image provided by The National Trust for Historic Preservation shows the Mountain View Black Officers' club in Fort Huachuca, Ariz. The club is on the 2013 list of 11 Most Endangered Historic Places released by The National Trust for Historic Preservation. This example of a military service club built specifically for African-American officers faces demolition by the U.S. Army. Preservationists say the Army has blocked efforts to list the property on the National Register of Historic Places. (The National Trust for Historic Preservation)

Sorry for the small image size.

When I went to school there for the 96B (intelligent analyst) course, the enlisted club was called the “Spice Rack” which we of course changed to Spy’s’ Rack.

we’ve locally been trying to save it for several years, but the NAACP and the Loud Mouths (you can think of their names) have not given one penny or one second of air time to make it happen.

Wow, I thought the Astrodome had already been demolished.

Used to head down there from Austin with the family, watch a game, and then hit up Astro World!

I have a white friend who now owns several graveyards to take care of them. It includes 1 black graveyard, rare for the rural region. He gets so mad because even though there are several Civil War black veterans buried there, he cannot get local blacks to help take care of it at all. He’s tried the local VFW and calling welfare office to get work, but no one of that persuasion helps him, as he says, “take care of their own people”.

What will we really miss if those places are torn down tomorrow? I won’t miss anything. And I sure won’t donate to have monuments to racism, oppression, sports, defunct airlines, etc., preserved.

Just re-name the road up to it after General Robert E. Lee and send out press releases.

Believe me, he’s been very active, both himself working them and getting other help. As a group we are all very aware of BS and prison help, etc. He started buying old sites 30 years ago and is very experienced with the whole deal!

I agree to an extent.

I am, however, very enamored of historic things, so that part of me pines for saving things.

No problems when private people take care of it.

“When I went to school there for the 96B (intelligent analyst) course, the enlisted club was called the “Spice Rack” which we of course changed to Spy’s’ Rack.”

Is that course also called “Intelligence Analyst” for some of the lesser qualified people?

Sometimes it is time for things to go. Can’t see why we need to support saving any of these.
