not sure i buy this ‘cover up’ stuff. I mean who is covering up? why? for whom? who benefits from the cover up? how?

TWA 800 was downed in July, 1996 during Bill Clinton's first term. This was just a few months before the election of 1996 in which he was re-elected.
If this news had come out that it had been a terrorist attack during the time of his "peace dividend" when the military was being downsized, he probably would not have been re-elected.
Also this news would have killed the airline industry and maybe put the brakes on the booming economy at that time.
