Chicago Teachers Union Prez Blames 'Rich White People'

Education: The president of the Chicago Teachers Union charges that racism and "rich white people" are to blame for the immense financial and educational crisis facing the Chicago Public Schools.

Tbe Chicago Public Schools (CPS) represent everything that is wrong with public education in America. They are in thrall to the unions that run the system and bankrupt it through bloated salaries and pensions while too many of the students trapped inside graduate as functional illiterates, if they graduate at all.

Poor academic performance generally, a huge budget shortfall and poorly attended schools in declining neighborhoods recently forced CPS to close 49 schools in an attempt to close a $1 billion budget gap. But according to CTU President Karen Lewis, the root cause is not the lack of educational competition or the inability to fire or reward teachers on the basis of student academic performance.

In a speech Wednesday before the upscale City Club of Chicago, Lewis asked, "When will we address the fact that rich, white people think they know what's in the best interest of children of African-Americans and Latinos — no matter what the parent's income or education level."

She decried members of the "status quo, the people who are running the schools and advising the mayor on how to best run our district, know what good education looks like because they have secured it for their own children in well-resourced, public and private institutions."

As we have noted, the unions run Chicago schools and seek to preserve the status quo of a virtual education monopoly. Lewis has fought the use of any objective analysis of teacher performance despite the fact that just 15% are proficient in reading and that four of 10 CPS students do not graduate from high school.

She has a valid point.
Why would anyone seek advice from an Olympic athlete on how to improve one’s performance in athletics?

Why would anyone seek advice from a golf pro on the game of golf?

Why would anyone seek out a certified financial advisor on money management?

I can’t think of a single reason to inquire of a military officer about battle strategies.

Likewise, it makes no sense to seek out someone who has been well educated on education policies.

We wouldn’t have 3/4 of the problams in this country that we have now, if we had never had a dark skinned person here.

It isn’t pretty, but it is the truth.

That is what a union slug president looks like. But she voted for McCain and Romney.

So SHE was the one!

“When will we address the fact that rich white people think they know what’s in the best interests of African-American and Latino children, no matter what their parents’ income or education level?” she said during a luncheon presentation to the City Club of Chicago.

Race is one of Lewis’ favorite topics, even though it largely distracts, inflames and muddies whatever policy issue she attempts to advance at the time. In her speech Tuesday, those issues included the need for art and music in Chicago Public Schools, the desire for bold ideas from City Hall and tax reform to fund the schools.

During her City Club speech, Lewis referred over and over to “the children.” She attacked “rich white people” who don’t really care about “black and brown” kids. She attacked banks, CPS, City Hall, Springfield, CEOs and, of course, editorial boards.

But let’s be honest about what CTU is and what it does. It’s a labor union whose primary responsibility is to protect and boost the pay and benefits of the adults in the system. CTU supporters may hoist signs at rallies that read, “Make Kids a Priority!” But CTU doesn’t, nor is it designed to.

Putting kids first would conflict with the very tenets of CTU’s agenda. Putting kids first would mean expanding school choice, eliminating tenure, prohibiting teacher strikes and instituting merit pay. Those policies offer the city’s least advantaged students a shot at a better school. Those policies keep strong teachers in the classroom.

CTU consistently fights those policies. Like all teacher unions, CTU is devoted to protecting pay and pensions for the grown ups. Just look at the pension stalemate in Springfield. Stalling necessary pension changes has been priority No. 1.
