SPRINGFIELD — Police arrested a 20-year-old woman, a stripper who had apparently just gotten out of work early Friday, on heroin charges after the car she was riding in allegedly ran a red light at Union and Maple streets.

“Since she was just coming from work at a local strip club she did not have enough clothing on to conceal the illegal narcotic,” Sgt. John M. Delaney said. “The officers had her step from the vehicle and the 47 bags of heroin fell easily to the pavement. “

"gotten", is that really a word, or just poor slang for "got"? The people who write as journalists now really amaze me.

“Up against the car, and spread ‘em.”

Her life is not destroyed; it may in fact be redeemed. I know from personal experience that the worst s**t that ever happened to me might have saved my life, and the best s**t that I THINK was the best that ever happened to me, nearly killed me.

I agree with you that this is a possibility for her.

It depends on how far gone she is and how much inner strength she is willing to muster in order to change her life.

Because she’s very young, seems to be in really deep trouble, and is living a lifestyle which doesn’t usually produce a quality circle of friends, I think her future doesn’t look bright.

That she is caught and so is no longer living under cover of darkness is probably the best thing that could happen to her, and I agree that, now, there is hope.

I agree with everything you wrote, except this:

It depends on how far gone she is and how much inner strength she is willing to muster in order to change her life.

Recovery from addiction and/or alcoholism does not depend on how far gone we were. As the Promises in the Big Book so eloquently puts it: "No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others" and my experience and observation is that the very worst among us can and do recover. Second, if we employ inner strength, we are screwed. We must rely on a Power greater than ourselves. We cannot recover all by our selves, no matter how 'strong' we think we are.

By “inner strength” I meant the strength which we gather, of course, with God’s help. Sorry I wasn’t clear.

I have never used drugs, but I have worked with people who have and have known, and still know of, those who have serious addictions. I have seen and continue to see these tragedies unfolding.

Some people manage to recover but some do not. The strength even to turn to God can be out of reach for some in that situation, although I always hope in and have faith in God’s love for each of us, even if it takes a person until the very moment of his death to turn to God.

I have deep and sincere respect for whoever it is that you know who has suffered and recovered. I hope that this woman will have a similar experience.

I think we’re focusing on two sides of the same coin. I don’t think anyone is necessarily lost and I can’t see the future. My comment about the young woman’s life being destroyed was meant for the present and, possibly, the future.

I have learned from you to run my posts by my attorney before posting and to never, ever post in a hurry.
