Rice consumption continues to decline. Statistics Korea on Thursday said that the country's annual per capital rice consumption stood at 69.8 kg last year, dwindling to nearly half over three decades since it peaked at 135.6 kg in 1979.
That was a daily rice consumption per person of 191.3 g, no more than half a bowl of rice per meal.
In 1972, 368.6 g of rice were consumed daily per person, meaning one person ate a full bowl of rice per meal.
"Rice consumption is on the decline because alternatives are getting more popular, and there is such a variety of processed food," a Statistics Korea official said. "If the trend continues, daily rice consumption will drop to a bowl of rice in 10 years."

Talking about North Korea?
The average North Korean wishes he had half a bowl of rice for a daily meal.
Next thing we’ll hear is that they’re dying early because of their poor diet. Go back to eating rice, folks.
Oops, did I just kill a good story?
I spent four months in Korea in 1988 and had rice with just about every meal. Enjoyed it. Eating a Korean diet, I lost 15 pounds in four months without even trying.
A propos of nothing.
