Mayor drops-out of Bloomberg’s coalition, says ‘focus shouldn't be against law-abiding citizens’

An independent Illinois mayor is leaving New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s anti-gun coalition because he said the group strayed from its original mission and became too focused on pushing for an assault-weapons ban.

“I’ve dropped out of a group called Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG),” Rockford, Illinois mayor Larry Morrissey said at a Rockford Tea Party town hall Saturday as the crowd burst into applause. “The reason why I joined the group in the first place is because I took the name for what it said. Against ‘Illegal’ guns.”

“The challenge that we see day in and day out in the city of Rockford is not dealing primarily with assault weapons or machine guns, automatic weapons. It’s dealing with a typical handgun. All of those typical weapons are usually in the hands of people who are prohibited from having them,” Morrissey said.

“As the original mission swayed, that’s when I decided that it was no longer in line with my beliefs. …So that’s why I dropped out,” Morrissey explained. “The focus should not be against law-abiding citizens. We should be focusing our enforcement on folks who have no right to carry a gun, concealed or otherwise.”

Morrissey also said that he supports concealed carry and plans to apply for a permit when the opportunity becomes available to him in Illinois.

“Personally as well, I’ve had three threats that I’ve had to deal with since I got elected,” he said. “None of which turned out to be any major event, but, you know, once you get a death threat and you realize even with the support of the Rockford Police Department, I just know with myself, especially now with a very young family, I don’t want to put my family’s life at risk...(continued)

Exactly what I was thinking. However, what he's saying does sound like the truth. If he's got kids and death threats, he'd be a fool not to concealed carry. The press would have a field day with a gun grabbing mayor having a concealed carry weapon, so he may as well just come out now and save himself the grief.

That’s a shame; now Bloomberg’s going to “destroy” him.

How did he ever get elected mayor. Rockford is not exactly Tea Party country. But great to hear anyway.

It ain't Chicago, either. Rockford has a wide populist streak in it, and plenty of gun rights folks. Conservative Don Manzullo represented the area well until redistricted combine suburbanites beat him with carpetbagger Kinzinger in the primary.

Morrissey has also been decent on the pro-life stuff, and was instrumental in shutting down Rockford's abortion mill.

A plurality of Rockford voters would be Scoop Jackson Democrats with extra social conservatism thrown in. Morrissey, Dem turned Ind, knows how to play that.

Ok, thanks. I was in the city decades ago and it looked like the unions had already gutted it. Then the little bit I hear from the city is usually bad...but obviously you know the city much better than myself.

Maybe I’ll check it out again some time when I’m in the area.

The parasite is dying in Rockford; unfortunately the death is largely being caused by the ill health of the host. Morrissey has beaten off several union type opponents with a whole lot of difficulty. He also plays games with the oligopolistic corporate interests (First Rockford Group and Rockford Blacktop). His own law firm does well these days. He is, nonetheless, several manitudes of improvement over his predecessor Doug Scott.

There is good in Rockford, you just have toknow where to find it.

I know what this statist means by this, but I question the existance of such an animal.

All of God's creatures have an inborn right to defense of self.
